    Dating Thais

    Hello.

I am hoping to live in Thailand for a year (and maybe if I like it enough, longer – if I can find the extra income), and was wondering about the potential of getting a girlfriend.

I was curious if the Thai people even like Westerners. What physical traits appeal to Thais? My personality is my personality, so I'm not gonna be able to change that (nor would I want to :-P).

And IF I wanted to get a Thai girlfriend, how do I avoid someone who is in it for the money? What are their dating customs? I know a little about the dowry/sinsrod (sp?), but that’s for marriage.

Ummm, I dunno I’ve been reading posts with interesting titles, but haven’t really been able to gain much from ‘em.

    Any help would be appreciated!

(Sorry if this post is inappropriate. There's no cultural misunderstanding, but there aren't any no-no topics in here either)

Being white or very light complected is the one thing that you have going for you as far as Thai are concerned, They like light and do not like dark.

Be considerate even tho some do not seem to think that counts in Thai society and you will be OK, There have been Farang coming here in most places for so long that they seem to take what most of us do as just as acceptable as what they do, but then I notice nothing out of the ordinary most times, but when in Rome do as the Romans do.

ha ha ha, I am VERY white, so I guess that's a good thing. I got the funky 'ol farmer's tan going on though, so you might not be able to tell unless I'm shirtless. :

I'm somewhat of a bodybuilding hobbist, and as a result very muscular (but not Arnold Schwarzenegger muscular). What are the Thais gonna think of that?

I don't think that it will impress them to much, I know a guy who wears wife beater shirts and is very muscular but I haven't seen to many people crawling up to him, they thought it was pretty cool when he got drunk and crashed his new go fast motorcycle so hard that it tore it in 2 pieces tho.
You will probably be rated more on how you act than what you look like.
I think they kinda think the muscle beach is kinda show off, but I can't say for sure as the subject has never entered a conversation.

If you want one that does not want you for money, there going to be very hard to find, so it is best to test them. So when you go out on a first date, tell them you expect them to pay for there own share, if the woman does not go out on a 2nd date, you know they are looking at you as a free meal ticket, if she goes out with you on a second date as you are still going Dutch, then your about 50% shore she is looking at you as a meal ticket, so I would never pay for them on any outings till you are in a relationship, and the Thai woman has proven her self as not being a sponge.

    Way to go Paul,

Thats the reason that you never have to worry about a date, always alone and likely to stay that way.

Approximately half the population is female, so, as long as your pheromones are in working order, you look at least respectable and you have a social nature then your prospects are reasonable.

Thai women are no different than the rest of the female planetary population, treat them as you would treat your mother, that is, with love and respect, and you should have no problems. Unless you meet a young lady in one of the less salubrious Bangkok bars then there shouldn't be much of a problem in any relationship you establish. The best advice is use your common sense, if she keeps dragging you to one of the many gold shops then she is more interested in your wallet!

BTW, Mr Au is in the distinct minority (a minority of one), I think a woman stole a nickel from him in the past and he has never recovered.

FaranginPhetch, thanks for the info. I know the women here in America say they dislike muscular guys, but in reality they don't. They like it

I'm not heavily muscled, but it's good to know it won't really matter.

Paul, I read about making sure you go Dutch at least once to see what her reaction was, but it might've been one of your older posts.

Thanks for the response PeterG. Ha ha, I'll avoid those bars and those gold shops!

Bummer to hear about Peter though. I can SHORTA undestand his situation if he felt like he could trust her, but she stole from him. Though I must admit I wouldn't hold a grude for that long, nor would I if it were just a nickle (though I would dump her right away).

You need a slightly higher post count before you stop being a "fresh user" and are allowed to edit your posts.
