Thanks for the link Susana, that is a great site for us Juice Heads…..very interesting and the review on the Breville Juice fountain is pretty much spot on, they are a bit expensive compared to most juicers but very efficient, my model is a BJE400, I have had it a few years now and would buy another if this one ever failed.

    With this type of juicer.

Once juiced and settled, it is very clear and tastes very sweat.

And just to mix things up a bit and for a better taste, I add an orange and a kiwi fruit.
Fil, I finally had time to try your recipe! Thanks. But like YY, I 'edited' it a bit and skipped the garlic LOL I love garlicky flavors in my chicken and other meat recipes, but not in my juice.

I discovered that your concoction is nothing new in my Sister's household. Her doctor had prescribed a similar juice with Granny Apple (specifically), carrots, and some organic leafy vegetables to be taken at least 2 times a day as part of her anti-cancer diet. The doctor's instructions emphasized the importance of drinking the juice within a few minutes after it's made. The reason is so that the all important enzymes are captured, since prolonged exposure to the air will destroy the enzymes in the juice. Like within 20 minutes, the enzymes are all oxidized.

Hi Marie, has your sister not been well? Hopefully, the juice will benefit her health greatly!

Marie, I wonder why Granny Smith apples specifically? Also, did the doctor suggest organically grown fruits and veggies?

Thanks for any insight you can give us.

Re: Confessions Of A Fruit Monster

    Hey Marie,

I first started to juice after reading a liver cleansing book more than 15 years ago, and that was mainly carrots and celery, my sister is a juicer and we have traded a few different recipes over the years, she was adding Lebanese cucumbers to her juice, I tried them and liked the taste.....well....that was until they reached $9.50 a kilo here in Australia!!!!

I have only started to add the garlic and ginger in the last year and this is not for their taste but for their published health benefits.

One thing I add in Port Hedland that I have not got in the garden in Perth is Aloe Vera.

I am sorry to hear about your sister’s condition and I wish her all the best.

Fileep, aloe vera grows very well in Australian (sandy) soil. Ask someone with a bud to give it to you - it grows fast from vegetative propagation.

Aloe vera can be grown indoors, also. I brought some back from Texas a few years ago and gave it to friends who now have it growing in their kitchens. It's really hard to kill, too.

Fileep, is there a recommended amount of juice per day? Cup? Glass? I'm thinking the liver detox might be really good for people on lots of medications.

She has passed away. Her cancer was diagnosed quite late--on it's stage 4.

I suppose Granny Smith apples were recommended because: 1) they are very low in Saturated Fat, Cholesterol and Sodium; 2) they're also a good source of Dietary Fiber and Vitamin C; and 3) they are relatively crispier and can yield more juice.

The doctor also suggested organically grown foods to avoid problems related to pesticide residues and other contaminants on the skins.

About garlic, your comment triggered my curiousity about this vegetable. I am quite surprised to find out about its role as a huge health promoter--huge enough for it to gain a Superfood status! To wit, it contains medical properties that fight cancer, stroke, immune disorders, atherosclerosis, cerebral aging (including Alzheimer's disease), arhritis, and cataract formation.

Garlic boasts of about 100 nutrients, the most important of which in terms of health benefits is the sulphur compound Allicin, an amino acid. Allicin is formed instantly when you crush, chew or cut the cloves.

Having said that, I'd certainly consider flavoring more dishes with garlic --but, but, I'd still spare my juice from it. Hahaha.
