Firstime to CM , heard that the east of city, Moon Muang area are populated with farangs tourists like Khao San street . Is the west side a good place to avoid the many tourists and YET i would like to stay near the central? But could not find a cheap hotel/guest house inside central. any experts on the other side......pls comment..thks.

I'm staying near the west moat. It's lovely, there aren't many Farang so it's all very relaxed and smiley. If you're Farang in a less tourist area you're pretty much guaranteed that the locals will go out of their way to help you.

Cycled across to the east side today. Crowds of Farang who just stare at you if you dare smile at them. Some of them could do with putting a few clothes on too.

Maybe airlines flying into Thailand could show a video about how to smile.
