    Thailand to host jamboree

    Bangkok Post

From Dec 28-Jan 7 next year, the naval base in Had Yao, Sattahip is set to be the venue for the World Scout Jamboree, when more than 30,000 boy scouts will gather for various cultural exchange activities.

It is the first time that Thailand is to host such an international event for the boy scout community.

Thailand, as the host country, will benefit economically through the large influx of specialist tourists, many of whom will come not only for the jamboree itself but will also visit many of Thailand's tourist attractions, before or after the event, said an organising committee member.

To accommodate the event, the 2,500-rai naval base site will be transformed into a giant campsite to accommodate boy scouts from 151 countries.

A jamboree spokesman said work on the venue site has progressed well with all the basic infrastructure and utilities nearly in place.

Roads have been constructed with asphalt surfaces and already many of the temporary and permanent structures have been erected. A special railway network from Don Muang airport to Sattahip is being implement to transport boy scouts to the site.

The electrical system has been operational since the end of June. Meanwhile, the water supply and communication systems are already installed and ready to accommodate such a mega event, the spokesman said.

The boy scouts attending the event will participate in various cultural and adventure activities.

Among the exercises planned are snorkelling, rafting, boating, windsurfing, sailing and swimming.

These pursuits will be carried out on a 1.5-km stretch of Had Yao beach within the compound of the naval base.

Boy scouts will also take walking or short trips to visit sites nearby the venue of the meeting.

The organising committee said some boy scouts will also take the opportunity to travel around Thailand. To facilitate their travel, the TAT has joined forces with the Association of Thai Travel Agents to arrange pre and post tour programs for them.
