hi, i am back! with questions of course! comparing similar words!

hi, after awhile of getting enough rest. clearing my stuffs i am back to learning!

as usual, whenever i have some questions or thoughts, i will write them down on paper, and here what's of some i have compiled !
please do kindly help me ~... anyway anyone has any idea what's wrong with thai-language.com ?

    here it goes...

    1) been listening to bird - sabaai sabaai.. been wondering the difference between

    a)หาก and ถ้า ? when to use which ?

    b)แม้ and ถึง ? when to use which ?

    c)ถูกใจ and ชอบ ? how to use ถูกใจ ?

d)เสียดาย and เสียดาย ? when to use which?

    d)เสียใจ or เศร้าใจ ? when to use which ?
in my opinion, เสียใจ has abit of "regret" inside. however my gf told me she is เสียใจ when i say something that hurt her. is it because she is trying to speak my "level" of thai, or can เสียใจ means sad too ?

    2) คบกัน
i search about คบ it means to be friend with, but somehow in the song, it give me a feeling of "going steady" so if i am in thailand, if i was to say
    a) koon yaak gap phom kop gan mai ?
    does it means
you want to be friend with me ?
    or
you want to go steady with me ?

    3)ไป
there is alot of ไป in this song, what does it actually means beside "goes"
    คบกันไป
    เรานั้นจะอยู่เรียนรู้กันไป
    ทิ้งกันไป

    4)แปลก
    i feel strange. - phom roo-seuk bplaek.
    is this sentence ok ?

    5)เสียดาย
i search for its meaning, its say regret. feel sorry about a loss, its a shame.
    if i was to say
i regret not scolding her - phom sia daai mai du kao
is it correct ? somehow i feel using sia daai when there isnt any "reluctance" feelings inside is wrong.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

    side questions ( conversation )
may i know the meaning and a sample sentence of these two words

    a) gamlang jai (i believe it has something to do with perserverance or encouragement )

    b) ao jai sai

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------
thank you very much... actually i have many many much more questions, but i dont think i should lump them in 1 thread

and p.s guys i realise by reading song lyrics, it really can help your conversational skill. so when ya bored of reading those teaching books , you may want to read up some lyrics and hear some songs at ethaimusic.com while at the meanwhile look at their sentence structure and words meaning
    just my 2 cent.

I guess the song is สบาย สบาย I will try to come back and reply you later unless someone else have done it first (please, everyone )

Anyway, in the mean time, have a look here, it may help you with the lyric of the song. http://www.seasite.niu.edu/Thai/musi...abai_sabai.htm

Re: hi, i am back! with questions of course! comparing similar words!

GREAT Questions! I am curious to know most of the answers.... I'll try to help where I can.

    a)หาก and ถ้า ? when to use which ?
I have heard them used interchangeably, but seem to hear หาก more in songs than ถ้า

    d)เสียใจ or เศร้าใจ ? when to use which ?
in my opinion, เสียใจ has abit of "regret" inside. however my gf told me she is เสียใจ when i say something that hurt her. is it because she is trying to speak my "level" of thai, or can เสียใจ means sad too ?
I have only used เศร้าใจ at moments of depression and deep sadness and have used เสียใจ the rest of the time.

I appreciate your comment of your gf speaking 'your level' of Thai. It's the same for me, my family is trained on my level of speaking -- which allows us to have great conversations -- but doesn't allow me to grow and make sure I'm improving my vocab...

I'm certainly no expert, but I will try a few of your questions and see what corrections follow

ไป can also mean "too much". I've seen เกิืนไป and just ไป used this way.

Not sure, but I think when you are talking about a feeling you should use แปลกใจ

Sorry, not sure about sample sentences, but I think you're right about กำลังใจ I've seen ให้กำลังใจ to mean give encouragement, etc. And ao jai has to do with pleasing other people I think. So I'm guessing "ao jai sai" means pleasing a certain person

ok, I took a stab, how did I do? and I'm also curious about those other questions too...

I didn't see than last time that I read your post hence my last post

Anyway ... this is what I think.

    a)หาก and ถ้า ? when to use which ?
Like Pailin said, หาก is more 'poetic' kind of word.

Or you can use ถ้าหากว่า or ถ้าเกิดว่า to form 'what if ...' question.
It will be in the form of [ถ้าหากว่า (this thing happenned) + What will happen?]

    e.g. ถ้าหากว่าคุณถูกล็อตเตอรี่รางวัลที่1 คุณจะเอาเงินไปทำอะไร
(What if you win 1st prize in Lottery, what will you do with the money.)

    again ถ้าหากว่า is more formal.

    b)แม้ and ถึง ? when to use which ?
If we consider only in the case of the meaning 'even though', they they are interchangable. I feel that แม้ is more poetic than ถึง. You can even use ถึงแม้ว่า in the same way as แม้ or ถึง on its own.

    c)ถูกใจ and ชอบ ? how to use ถูกใจ ?

    Their meanings are very close.

I think you can pretty much ชอบ anything (food, colour, person, , weather, scenery, the pink shoes, etc.).

Theoritically, with ชอบ, it is YOU (or the subject of the sentence) who like those things ... so we focus on the person who do the liking; while ถูกใจ is used when something has some characteristics that make you like it ... so we focus on the item that has been liked.

Anyway, I think you refer to when either of them applied to a person; like this ... (suppose it is a guy say it to a girl) ผมชอบคุณ VS ผม(รู้สึก)ถูกใจคุณ; I think ผมชอบคุณ is just that; I like you , ผมถูกใจคุณ though it would translate to 'I like you' as well, it also implies 'you have something that I like, I have a feeling that I might like you.

    d)เสียใจ or เศร้าใจ ? when to use which ?
    (agree with Pailin)

    2) คบกัน
i search about คบ it means to be friend with, but somehow in the song, it give me a feeling of "going steady" so if i am in thailand, if i was to say
    a) koon yaak gap phom kop gan mai ?
    does it means
you want to be friend with me ?
    or
you want to go steady with me ?
คบกัน really does imply to go out with someone (as a girlfriend/boyfriend). Although tt used to be able to use as befriend with someone, but I don't think it is safe to use that now, people may think you are gay if you say you were คบกัน with you male friend for long time.

So if you would like to ask someone to be your girlfriend, use คบ
    ผมอยากคบกับคุณ คุณอยากคบกับผมไหม
(I would like to go out with you. Do you want to go out with me?)

But if you only want to get to know someone as a friend, may be use these sentences, for example.
    ผมอยากรู้จักคุณ ผมอยากเป็นเพื่อนกับคุณ คุณอยากเป็นเพื่อนผมไหม
(I would like to (get to) know you. I would like to be your friend. Do you want to be my friend?)

[NB: Although to use these sentence in guy-gal situation is quite cute and polite, I still think it is awkward to say these 'friend' stuff in guy-guy conversation. I suppose there is a way so say you want to be their friend without asking so directly. (let's go out and have a drink on me, for example .

    3)ไป
there is alot of ไป in this song, what does it actually means beside "goes"
    คบกันไป
    เรานั้นจะอยู่เรียนรู้กันไป
    ทิ้งกันไป
Like lamlam said it can mean 'too much', It usually came after an adjective or adverb e.g. มากไป ร้อนไป อิ่มไป. It really shorten from เกินไป; มากเกินไป ร้อนเกินไป อิ่มเกินไป.

It can also mean 'move forward' or 'from this point onward'. Though in each sentence it can translate differently, it give the feeling that from this point onward, 'oxoxox' will happen for some time. Most of the time, it has this meaning when more than one person get to do something together or it is a thing that more than one person doing it. It also come together with กัน --> กันไป

คบกันไป (from now on, we'll) go on together (for some time)
เรานั้นจะอยู่เรียนรู้กันไป (from now on) we will live and learn together (for some time)
ทิ้งกันไป = (you) dump (me) --> so it needed two people to do the ทิ้ง

Note: the phrase in the brackets not actually the translation of thai phrase but it is the hidden meanings.

It also has other meanings such as leave, off or away. It has this meaning when it has a sense of the subject left from A to B. (sorry it is difficult to explain, hope it makes sense)

for example กลืนอาหารเข้าไป has a sense that the food leaves your mouth into your tummy. เขาขว้างก้อนหินออกไป has a sense that the stone left his hand to whereever.

The first is the feeling of elation you get when you are successful at something. EG: an athlete wins a race. The second I believe is encouragement you give to someone else to help them succeed.

    4)แปลก
    i feel strange. - phom roo-seuk bplaek.
    is this sentence ok ?
yes, you can say that if you have strange feeling, like when you walk into an old house and feel like a house is probably haunted, you can say รู้สึกแปลก or when you are with someone and you feel light in your heart ;probably because you like her but you are not sure, you can say ผมรู้สึกแปลกทุกครั้งที่อยู่ใกล้เธอ. So it can be either good or bad feeling. It can also be รู้สึกแปลกๆ .

However you can also รู้สึกแปลกใจ as lamlam suggested, though this will mean you are surprised when unexpected thing/event happen. For example, if a girl that you thought she like someone else telling you that she want to go out with you, you can say that ผมรู้สึกแปลกใจที่คุณอยากคบกับผม เพราะผมนึกว่าคุณชอบคนอื่น
