Fried battered Banana (Gluay Khaeg)
Does anyone know how to make nice Gluay Khaeg? Can it be made from Banana which we normally find in supermarkets? (Gluay Hom)
1. The one with coconut flake and sesame in batter.I think we can find this style on roadside stalls in Thailand.
2. Also I'm looking for some recipe for battered banana to eat with syrup or icing sugar.
And if you know each type of banana in English would be very helpful to share. There are too many type in Thailand and I only know "Banana".
khob khun kha.

Re: Fried battered Banana (Gluay Khaeg)
peanutbutter, I love gluay khaeg. I live in the u.s. and thus far have not been able to find the type of banana used to make it. You cannot use gluay hom to make hluay khaeg because the flesh is too mushy. Oh you can use it if you insist but the result will not be the same. It requires glauy nam waa to make gluay khaeg and unfortunately I do not have the recipe for it.

Re: Fried battered Banana (Gluay Khaeg)
This is my favorite Thai snack as well. Here's the recipe:
2 cups rice flour (kao jao)
1/4 all purpose flour
1/2 shred coconut
1 table spoon sesame seed
1/2 cup palm sugar (I substituted with honey)
Ripped plantains (great substitutions for Thai banana)
Water
Mixed all ingredients together the batter should be on the thick side.
Sliced ripped plantains into the batter then deep fry until golden brown and drian well. Oil should be about between 375 to 400 degree.

Re: Fried battered Banana (Gluay Khaeg)
Hi Peanutbutter ... I have tried using plantains and it is great substitutions. Here in UK sometimes it called cooking banana (see this ). Here, some Supermarkets stock them, some won't; we can also get it from caribbean food shop/market.
I also tried using only regular banana that available which is same as what you got;Gluay Hom. but you need to get the one that still really really green otherwise they would have gone all too soft when fried. When I use green one, it is great. (supermarkets here have a habit of selling green bananas anyway, so it is not difficult for me to find some)ummm... I feel like having some now

Plantains are somewhat essentail staples of Caribbean cooking. The link below shows picture and description of plantains.

Yuum. I gotta get me some of that.
Nois' recipe sounds good. I never make deep fried stuff at home but...
Maybe use coconut water or milk for that extra bang?
