    I believe that happen in most of the tourism areas.
    In Thailand, if you shop at the local market or dine at
    the local patron places, it's much cheaper ,

    As a western tourist I really don't have a problem with dual
    pricing.
    Provided it is limited to public not commercial venues and that
    the signage is bi lingual.

    In my experience, I have found that signs are not bi-lingual where a dual pricing system exists but a seperate sign exists in Thai language. If you can read Thai numbers, try asking for a discount. (lot noi dai mai krup). It often works!

    That is the point I was wanting to make, gently.
    To be more direct.
    The lack of transparency is more a source of caution on the part of tourists than the policy itself.
    The typical reaction being that they become more judicious in their overall holiday spending as they feel less confidence in
    perceived values.
    I'm guessing also that perhaps there is a hesitancy to be
    more candid out of concern that it could be seen as
    potentially confrontational and therefore impolite in Thai
    culture.
