ยิ่งเพิ่มความน่าเอ็นดู . . .

This sentence in my book has me a little puzzled. I think I know the meaning, but I'm not certain. Here is the whole sentence:

ยิ่งเพิ่มความน่าเอ็นดูยิ่งขึ้นเมื่อยามหล่อนยิ้ม

I think this means something like:

"(Her) loveliness increased whenever she smiled."

What puzzles me is why the writer used ยิ่งเพิ่ม . . . ยิ่งขึ้น , instead of just writing ความน่าเอ็นดูขึ้นเมื่อยามหล่อนยิ้ม. Or is the meaning of the sentence more like:

"The more she smiled, the more her loveliness increased."

Actually, เมื่อยาม means "when" or "whenever", or "at times when". หล่อน just means "she".

However, you can't just say ...
ความน่าเอ็นดูขึ้นเมื่อยามหล่อนยิ้ม
(if you notice, there is no verb in this sentence. ขึ้น when means 'increase' is adjective, it will be verb only when it means step up (the stairs). its verb is เพิ่มขึ้น)

Anyway, the author played around with word orders so let's think back to the order of the scence,
when she smiles (cause) --> it (her smile) increases her loveliness even more (effect)

เมื่อยามหล่อนยิ้ม (รอยยิ้มของเธอ) ยิ่ง เพิ่ม ความน่าเอ็นดู ยิ่งขึ้น
When she smiles, it (her smile) even increases her loveliness even more.

Then the author just moved the first phrase to the end.


note that each ยิ่ง (even) emphasis different thing. If you feel that it is a bit repetitive, you can use other variations such as ...

เมื่อยามหล่อนยิ้ม (รอยยิ้มของเธอ) ยิ่งเพิ่มความน่าเอ็นดูมากขึ้น

Couldn't เมื่อหล่อนยิ้ม be used instead to mean the same thing? If not, how does the inclusion of ยาม change the meaning?

That is correct. you don't really need ยาม. note that ยาม has the same meaning as เมื่อ, it's only more elegant to use in literacy, so really you can say ...
.. เมื่อหล่อนยิ้ม
.. ยามหล่อนยิ้ม
.. เมื่อยามหล่อนยิ้ม
they all have the same meaning.

Not as far as I know, Pailin. หล่อน is an alternative pronoun for women, used in the same way เขา is used. I think it is mainly used in written Thai--not sure whether it can be used in speech.

Yes, DogoDon, Pailin, หล่อน can be used in speech. When it is used in speech, it means 'you' (a woman) with a slight connotation of sarcasm. For example, your roommate wants to borrow your favorite blouse. You hesitate but finally give in but she knew that you grudgingly let her have the item. She decides not to use it after all so she gives it back to you, saying "เอาของหล่อนคืนไปย่ะ"

Another use of หล่อน to mean 'you' in speech is when the mistress addresses her servant. Example, the servant disappears and the mistress is looking for her, when she finds her, she might say นี่หล่อนหายหัวไปไหนมายะ
