Re: information on thai prison
Letters are allowed. They can do work but the pay is not good. They don't have to buy things inside but if they did have a prison bank accont then they can buy coupons to buy food and other basic essentials. Most people agree that government rations are not enough in order to survive. Looks like you don't know that we have a "man on the inside" at the moment and you can read his daily life at www.ThaiPrisonLife.com. This prison seems to quite good so don't expect to see the same at every prison. Do you have the name of the prison where your friend is? Maybe we can get some details for you? Like days you can visit and what can be sent.

Re: information on thai prison
Can you let us know the name of the prison so we can find out the details for you. Not every prison is the same. Plus, if it was a more serious offence, then there are more restrictions on visits and receiving parcels.
In the book, "the damage done", Warren Fellows wrote that a friend of his mentioned the name of the book "Midnight Express" in a letter to him. The guard didn't know what the book was about but just got the impression they were planning an escape. So Fellows was thrown into solitary confinement and punished.may i know that what kind of letters can we wrote ?
because from my experience in my country, letters are screened (viewed by officers) before they are allowed to reach the prisoners..
The punishment seems a bit extreme, and it is possible that Fellows misunderstood the reason for his punishment. Plus, this was a few years back and things are not so bad now. Anyway, I sent Gor a couple of prison books, including this one, and they got through alright. Gor said he wanted to see what they had written about prison life.

i cant tell you the name of the prison because i couldnt make up what his mom is trying to tell me.
i am not sure where is the prison, but he lives in lopburi, and i am travelling to the town to meet up his parents. so maybe the prison is there as well ?
from what his sister told me, the visiting time is from 9am to 2pm..
he has not been sentenced yet, but they are charging him for possesion of drug. thought he claim he keeping it for his friend and did not eat a single pill.
i need to know
1) how often can we send letters ?
2) are the letters screened ?
3) how long will it take for him to recieve the letters
4) can we include photos in the letters ?
5) can they write letter back ?
from what his mom told me, police can be bribed in the jail.. i am not sure to what extend they can be bribe. but i want to make sure he is having a better life out there cause i feel the sentence is going to be long and harsh..
thanks alot fellows.Last edited by javanoob; 17-01-07 at 10:13 PM.

Re: information on thai prison
In your friend's case, bail probably would have been set though it is possible that his family couldn't afford to pay this. It could be as much as 1 million baht though you can use house registration instead of cash. Court process takes a long time and it may be 8-12 months before he goes to court. Depends on the back log in Lop Buri.
1) how often can we send letters ?
You can send letters as often as you like though he might receive them only once or twice a week. There are restrictions on sending parcels. Make sure there are no metal or even foil in the parcels as they will be rejected and returned to sender. See www.thaiprisonlife.com for more details.
2) are the letters screened ?
Yes, both letters in and out will be checked. They might not like letters written in English.
3) how long will it take for him to recieve the letters
Sometimes quite quick depending on policy at the prison.
4) can we include photos in the letters ?
Yes you can.
5) can they write letter back ?
Yes they can, though some prisons will have restrictions like only once a week and only 15 lines. They might not allow letters to be written in English if there are no guards that can read English.
Relations can set up a kind of bank account for him when they first visit. Then you can pay some money into it whenever you visit. He shouldn't need more than 3,000 baht per month. Some live on no help from outside at all though it is a lot harder. Extra money will provide an alternative to the free food which isn't always that nice or filling. He can use it to buy packets of cigarettes which is like currency inside. He can use this to bribe people or to obtain other essentials that he needs. For example, space to sleep on the floor, blankets, utensils etc. For the first month or so he would need more money to set himself up.
Check www.Thaiprisonlife.com as most of these questions are already answered there.
Also, let us know how you get on. Not all prisons are the same and other people might find your experience useful.

Re: information on thai prison
thanks for the info richard..
from what i heard from his mom, initially they talk about a 70000 baht bail, but i dont know why, they drop the idea all together telling me a bail is impossible. maybe its because of the amount of $ involved..
wierd thing is.. you say it could take up to 1 yr for him to be charged in court but his mom told me it take ard two months before he is charged.
and oh yea, how do you say in thai
- can we bail him by house registration ?
- what is the name of the prison ? ( reuan jam nee chue arai?)
here are some info i wish to know richard
1) content of letters ? what can be wrote and what cannot be wrote ?
life of his gf ? what his gf currently doing, love problems ?
soccer score ? news update ? jokes ? quiz ?
2)what kind of photo is allowed ? how many photos are allowed ? during my time in my country, photo too sexy or contain unrelated personnels aint allowed. do we need to write anything behind the photos ?
3)on his case, he is caught while helping to keep drug for his friend. he said he did not eat, and his friend is selling, so
may i know if the sentence is heavier if..
1) he eat drug ?
2) he kept drug ?
3) he sell drug ?
and how long should each sentence be ?
4) lets say the bail isnt possible, and he is now already in the lockup, if he is found guilty, will the days in the lockup be run concurrently with his sentence ? let say he is sentence 24months, he is in the lockup for 4months already, so total it will be 20 months jail.
and is there any remission on the sentence ? let say he is charge for 24 months, after remission it will be 18 months, its here in my country, so i am wondering will it be the same over there..
4)is there anyway to get him out of prison be it good or bad
thanks
