    Is Northern Thailand safe?

I went Thailand for the first time this Christmas period and have just returned. I must say apart from a few things what a great place, I stayed all over the south with a group off lads I know, and I also meet a friend in Phuket, who lives there for 8 months of the year.
This summer (English summer) I am thinking of going up north, I meet a girl (who does not speak much English at all) from Ko Samui her family live in Kamphaeng Phet. I have been thinking about going to Bangkok for 2 days then the train to chang mai, stay there for two days then down to Kamphaeng Phet for how long I don’t know.

I would like to see the real Thailand.

My question is, would I be safe up north?

Just to add, that I have been all around Europe on my motorbike on my own, plus I am a 6 foot skin head he he. Put we all no some places in some countrys are no go and with not knowing this one, any advice would really appreciated.

    Many many thanks

    Darren.

Presumably you mean safe, if so, the answer is yes unless you walk in front of a truck!

Seriously, except for the deep south, all of Thailand is safe unless you indulge in unsafe practices.

If you go BK-CM by train make sure you go in a first clas air conditioned sleeper carriage. It makes the 10+hour trip much much more comfortable and doesn't cost that much either.

(Sorry Nam Phyyng-hit the wrong button there!) All I was going to say was: make sure you book the bottom bunk-the top one is too near the ceiling and thus very cramped.

Better still, book the whole cabin and have some privacy too.

""Better still, book the whole cabin and have some privacy too.""

Does anyone no how much the cabin is?

When I get Chiang Mai or Lampang, I was thinking of getting a motorbike and riding down to Kampheng Phet, this looks to be about 125 miles, is the road good or bad?

When I am there I was going to go to Sukhothai for a day and the khaoson N.P.
Are they worth a day out?

Thank you all for your advice and what a great site!

Not sure you can do that. I had a sleeper to myself on the Chiang Mai/Bangkok sleeper until dinner was done, then the conductor stuck somebody in the top bunk. Presumably he "sold" it to a passenger once the train was on the go.
