One travel guide said that footwear in the temple grounds have to be closed footwear eg shoes and so sandals are not allowed.
It is already known that all footwear have to be removed when entering the inside of the temple.
Are shorts ok if they are 3 centimetres above the knee high?
Or are trousers more socially acceptable?

Shorts and sandals would be OK in most rural temples and in Bangkok too. However, "royal" temples are more strict. The picture above was taken at Wat Phra Kaew in Bangkok. If you do not want to offend anyone and want to show proper respect to our religion then please dress politely.

I just got back from Thailand, where one of the places we went to was the Grand Palace.

You CAN wear sandals to go to the Grand Palace, but you have to have sandals that have straps around the heel - so cannot wear flip flops for instance.

    Hope that helps!

Sawadee khrap. Unlike in the west, the idea is to go out of your way to do what is most proper and respectful. Feet are a big deal and your feet should be covered. If you sit on the floor, sit on your feet and do not allow them to point at the monks, images, etc. Remember, a temple is just like a church in the west. Show some respect and you will get some in return. Choke dee khrap.

    so happy!

I went to this little garden place [I don't remember the name] where the king stays for a while. Very beautiful!!! Oh I have some pictures from that scenery if you're interested. Well, I was wearing a shirt and capris with some thong shoes, but not considered as flip flops. They had a solid heel. My brother was wearing shorts and a tank top. Of course he couldn't enter the palace without having long pants on. The garden provided them for him to wear for the trip and it was quite funny. My brother and I still joke about them, but in a nice way!! I also saw some foreigners there too!!!!!! I think they were from North Carolina just above from me! I hope that helps too.

Anna, are you talking about Doi Suthep in Chiang Mai? I vaguely recall that you wrote that you visited that place. Also, His Majesty has a winter residence there, so that's why I think...

I think Anna might mean Bang Pa-In - which was the summer palace for the king.

It's absolutely beautiful - I was there in December - the grounds and the buildings are gorgeous - well worth visiting. Plus, there was a tiny market outside where they were selling wraparound skirts very cheap - about 85 baht I believe!

    Notice!

Nevermind. Right now I'm too lazy to scan the pictures right now and to look for the brochsure. I think it was in Chiang Mai. I think it's near that temple up in the mountain. Hmm..... you walk a lot wait that doesn't help LOL forget it. If you guys are really interested in seeing the pictures, you can just send an e-mail to me. If you have AIM that would be sooooo much easier on me.
