    Re: +Thailand Fever+

I have read Thailand Fever and found it useful in the most general sense. If you ever think that you are getting a grip on Thailand that is when you will learn that things are not as they appear.

BTW...did you notice that the model on the front of the book is actually a Ladyboy model (a fairly familiar one at that). You see, things are not always as they appear in Thailand.

I used the book as a guide to conversation with my wife. "Honey, I read somewhere that such-and-such is true about Thai people. What is that about?" More than once her serious response dropped my jaw.

It is okay and good on things like naam jai. But my friend gave up after a few paragraphs and said, 'the writing is too heavy'. She prefers laughing and joking to something that might be a little bit serious.

Not so long ago, a farang stormed to the chat room feeling very frustrated. He absolutely loved Thailand Fever, finding it very enlightening. But his Thai gf adamantly refused to read it. According to him, she told him that only tingtong read it, and would not explain further why. Purportedly, she even tossed it away when he coaxed her to see some parts.

At that time we could not offer any clue on why the Thai gf would refuse to read it. We just told him to take it easy for the meantime and explain to her later about the importance of understanding each other's culture.

But after reading your comment, I have now started to realize that the girl in question might have had a similar reason. Or maybe she found the book too revealing for comfort. I have met some girls who would rather trade light banters than discuss serious issues because they are uncomfortable with thoughtful self-disclosures.
I value informed opinion, not opinion that stems from nothing but attitude. The latter is the depth of ignorance.

The truth? There're some Thai women who really don't want their foreigner boyfriends to know too much.

Be it at opposite ends of the spectrum, but the last two posts are very insightful.

In context I agree with both 100%.

Personally after reading the book I gave it to my fiance and although I never brought it up when I was last with her I didn't see it anywhere. She hasn't talked about it and I haven't been concerned as it has helped me understand women a little more. We have touched on it so I do know she has read parts of it at least.

And of course it could work both ways...

I had to buy another copy for a friend of a friend who wanted to study up about her farang boyfriend.

Another point of view (mine) is that all relationships are different so *any* book on relationships has to be very vague to be relevant to many people. Any book that is too specific is only going to apply to a certain percentage.

Just my point of view and it seems many disagree with me. Fair enough. But I see life and relationships as for living/experiencing and not following a manual.
