First, 'Satay' isn't even a Thai food - it is Indonesian, also a popular dish in Malaysia. Of course, in the country of origin it is chicken and not pork!

Even 'Panaeng' curry, isn't Thai. It's origins are from the south of Thailand and again Indonesian/Malay food.

Red Curry with Duck = well, i have hardly ever been to any Thai restaurants (in Thailand) which offer this dish. Red curry is of course popular in Thailand, but as for adding duck, seems more like a dish aimed at foreigners.

Another dish on this top ten which is a little rare in Thailand is 'Chicken with Cashew Nuts'. Foreigners seem to like this dish more than Thais. It isn't a very popular dish with Thais. In fact, many of my Grade 4-5 students before had never heard of this dish!

And finally, 'Phat Thai' - again, foreigners love this dish. But as for Thais themselves, i doubt that this would get in their Top Ten. Same goes for 'Coconut Soup with Chicken'.

Uptoyou_inUdon mentioned Phat See Eu as his favourite dish. this dish isn't Thai though - Phat See Eu is Chinese food. David said 'Hard boiled black eggs' - those are Chinese too.

When you get to the heart of things, a lot of stuff which is claimed Thai - isn't actually Thai at all.
maybe we should rename this thread as "top ten favourite food in thailand". But of course i believe McDonalds and KFC will then start appearing.. LOL

I already listed KFC, the spicy Thai version, as part of my top ten as far back as post #3...

Surely there are a lot of imports from China cos of the huge number of Chinese immigrants over the past several hundred years, and these dishes are as Thai as they are Chinese today.
Chicken with cashew nuts would be one example, and those back eggs, which the Chinese call 100-year-old eggs and some Thais describe as ''beer food'', known in the vernacular as ''kai kee ma'', or ''horse piss egg''.
For sure my fave would have to be be anything kra poa - fish, pork and especially kra pao pork with kai kee ma.

The black egg is called "kài-yîeow-máa". Kee is feces, yieow is urine.
It is not one of popular dishes for Thai women, but men like it, eating with boiled rice, spicy salad with fresh shreded ginger, pad crispy gra prao, etc.

"Pad gra prao" is all time hit order, I read somewhere long time ago kao pad gra prao kai dow is the most favorite dish for Thai men, convenient and tasty.

gra prao or holy basil is a Thai herb, it's used for Thai cuisine as spice and a medicine for traditional Thai medicine long time ago

    Stir-fried Pork with holy basil
    Written by Richard Barrow

One of the most famous Thai dishes around the world is this one, stir-fried pork fried with chili and holy basil. You dont have to use minced pork, as variations include chicken or beef. In Thai it is called moo pat ga-prao. The last part refers to the basil. It is quite simple to cook and the result is very delicious. Can you believe that the above was cooked a few days ago at my local food shop? It is one of those places with an open front with a minimum of decoration. There are thousands of these shops around Thailand. They are much cheaper than going to a restaurant. Believe it or not, this dish was only 25 baht which is about 60 cents. Most foreigners miss out on these meals as they think that they will get ill if they eat street food. So, they decide to pay three or four times as much in a restaurant for exactly the same dish. The ingredients probably came from the same market and were cooked in the same kind of kitchen. I am not saying you wont ever get ill by eating street food. You just need to use some common sense. If you see a lot of Thai people eating at a food stall or food shop, then the chances are high that the food is not only delicious, but safe to eat too!

As usual, I have also shot a video showing how this was cooked. It is number 11 on the list. Thanks to Pornsiri Kitchen in Soi Sulao for giving us the demonstration.

Thank you for clarifying this Mel. I surely would not want to order this dish the way I translated it in my bad Thai.
Surely some of the street food you can get in Thailand is among the best. I like the way you can just grab some on ther way past without having to go sit down in a restaurant and pay double the price for something not as tasty.
