Age restrictions for Thai coffee adverts?

    Independent Online

Bangkok - Following a ban on advertising alcohol and energy drinks, the Thai government is considering restricting the advertising of products containing caffeine, including coffee, a news report said on Thursday.

Public Health Minister Sudarat Keyuraphan was quoted by The Nation newspaper as saying that the government was seriously considering curbs on ads for caffeine beverages because the underlying messages they carried were not suitable for young people.

"To ensure we get co-operation on this issue, we plan to send out letters seeking assistance from relevant companies," she said.

On Tuesday the Thai Cabinet approved a ban on television and radio advertising for alcoholic drinks between the hours of 10pm and 5am in a move intended to decrease drunk driving and other alcohol-related problems.

The ad ban also included so-called energy drinks, which contain caffeine and vitamins, and are popular with truck drivers, students and late-night revellers.

The advertising restrictions were opposed by the liquor and energy drink industries, but Thai Health Promotion Institute chairpseron Dr Hathai Chitanon said they did not go far enough.

He said the alcohol advertising ban needed to be extended to 24 hours a day to be effective. - Sapa-DP

when I was in Thailand last year there was a big advertising campain with Britney Spears all over the skytrains, advertising Pepsi Cola, well Pepsi and Coka-Cola contain a relativly small amount of caffein compaired with coffee, since these 2 companies have massive advertising campains, will thailand want to miss out on the massive amounts of advertising from these 2 products, does this mean Pepsi and Coka-Cola advertising will be band as well, as they are not promoted as being an energy drink, but for there great taist and enjoyment of life.

Agreed. Yet, even that would still be only a grain of sand against the wind.

In my humble opinion, the Thai government like most governments is one Big circus. But the Thai government seems to have less logic, if any, than other goverments. If you start banning everything that you think is harmful, then you would have to ban breathing the air in Bangkok.

breathing air in Bangkok = necessary

consuming large amounts of alcohol and other harmful substances = optional

    Enough said.

I hope that doesn't spell the end of the coffee culture in thailand. I do enjoy chatting over a nice warm cup of hot mocha.

*Sigh* speaking of another one of the greatest regrets in life. The banning of chewing gum in my homeland.

I think only people with fast computers tend to post things twice (from my own experience).
