    ฉลาดเป็นกรด

How do you translate this analogy "ฉลาดเป็นกรด" into Thai?

Suzie, do you mean to translate it into English? How about 'sharp as a tack' or 'smart as a whip'? I am sure others can come up with more.

Doesn't กรด mean "acid"? That's an interesting expression. I don't quite see how being like "acid" makes you smart. But Nu's translations seem to make sense, I guess.

Yes, DogoDon, กรด means 'acid'. To me when a person is said to be 'as smart as acid' it also carries a connotation that he/she can see through to the hidden meaning. Other words, he/she can read between the lines and cannot be easily decieved. In addition to being book smart this person is also street smart.

i think nu's suggestions are excellent.

we have another English expression that looks like a good translation, but isn't: 'to have an acidic wit'. it means to have a sharp, quick, sarcastic sense of humour.

    all the best.
