    Thaksin to return in days?

    Waiting for Thaksin

    (BangkokPost.com)

Ex-prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra is likely to return from exile within days, after completing a tour of South America, the Matichon newspaper reported exlusively on Friday.

The newspaper, quoting "an informed source in the People Power party" now ruling the country, said Mr Thaksin intends to get his legal fight under way against corruption charges filed by a military-appointed committee.

"He will return to Thailand and report to police to be charged, and to fight the cases filed against him," the newspaper report claimed.

But he hopes to remain in Thailand only a week, to handle legal matters, according to the report. Then the ex-premier intends to ask the court for permission to travel while on bail, and head abroad again.

The report could not be verified, and in fact clashed with numerous other claims of the timing of the return of the controversial ex-premier - which could cause protests and even violence, depending on how it proceeds.

During last year's election, politician (now Interior Minister) Chalerm Yubamrung claimed Mr Thaksin would return on Valentine's Day, next week.

Not long afterwards, Mr Thaksin told news outlets in Hong Kong he would return in April, specifically at Songkran (April 13).

Shortly after that, his wife, Khunying Potjaman, told the Supreme Court she expected Mr Thaksin to return in May.

Earlier this week, without referring to Mr Thaksin's plans, Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej said his government might move to pardon Mr Thaksin and 110 former Thai Rak Thai colleagues who have been banned from politics until 2012 - but not for at least two years.

Mr Thaksin's former legal aide and family spokesman Noppadon Pattama, now foreign minister, said on Friday, when asked about the Matichon report, that Mr Thaksin "is likely to return to Thailand before May," but he gave no actual date.

Also on Friday, Mr Chalerm said he has had no contact with Mr Thaksin about the matter. But if asked, he said, he would recommend that the deposed premier return immediately, because the political situation is positive. He did not clarify this comment.

But Mr Chalerm said he will personally go - presumably to the airport - to receive Mr Thaksin when he returns. He intends to ask the ousted premier to help the government by giving advice on national problems.

"It is better that he come back soon. If he came tomorrow or the next couple of days, it would be the best," Mr Chalerm told reporters at Government House before the first Cabinet meeting. "I will be on hand at the airport to greet him myself and we will protect him. I can arrange the best team for him overnight."

Justice Minister Sompong Amornwiwat was more conservative, He said related ministries will have to discuss security measures for the return of Mr Thaksin, but the ex-premier "will be treated as an ordinary citizen". He vowed, as have all ministers asked, not to interfere in judicial processes involving Mr Thaksin.

Don't matter when he comes back, there is noting going to be done about his rampant corruption and he will be forgiven and most likely will be PM in a week, just look, they were going to extradite him and his wife, she came back and they did nothing except get a few baht check for a bail payment.

I think it will be at least a year before he is PM again.

If the truth is revealed about the massive number of people who were killed during the drug eradication time a few years ago, the Thaksin, I think will be a memory. U.S involvement was massive in the killings. As has been for years.
