It is not the most comfortable way to get around Isaan but it is probably the cheapest:

The Bus

This Information/Schedule is a collection of Bus Companies that operate out of the Bangkok terminal owned by The Transport Company Limited. This should give a good idea of prices to different cities and how long the ride should take. Air-conditioned and Non-airconditioned buses leave the northeastern bus terminal at Talat Mo Chit, Phahonyothin Road, Bangkok Tel: 2720299-300.

When you arrive at the Bus Station there will be many Bus Companies to choose from and you will want to look for the company that provides the service to the city you are going to.

To get to the right Bus Station in Bangkok take the BTS (BKK rail system) to Mo Chit Station and then take a taxi on to the Bus Station: just tell the driver “Mo Chit Bus Station” and he will know.

Most of the buses to Isaan leave BKK at night (and arrive from Issan in the morning) so the worst crowds/traffic will have cleared but it is still very busy: try to leave a little extra time to get through the process. If you are taking a daytime bus, then give yourself even more time especially if it is your first time in the terminal.

Here are links to help explore The Transport Co. Ltd. Services to the Northeast. There is also a Home link on the web pages to get bus schedules to other regions from the north bus terminal. A traveler would probably need the bus station near the Ekkimai BTS Station if planning to take a bus to Pattaya or somewhere else in the South.
