    Train service across the Mekong

A rail link between Thailand and Laos is scheduled to open this May.

    Bangkok Post
    February 28, 2008

Thirty per cent of the total project costs of 197 million baht was covered by the Thai government with the remainder funded by a "soft" government-to-government loan.

Three-and-a half kilometres of tracks will connect the town of Nong Khai to Tha Na Laeng, across the border in the Lao PDR. The work is now around 80 per cent complete, said Nong Khai Governor Jadej Musikwong, adding that the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has undertaken to train Laotian officials how to operate the service.

The French government has put up two million baht to fund a study into the feasibility of extending the tracks a further nine kilometres to reach the Laotian capital of Vientiane, according to the SRT.

The 1st class train into Thanaleng is not express, but if you took the overnight one, about 10hrs or so long, you get to sleep in a very comfortable cabin (I feel it's already excellent comfort) with just another person of your same sex and you both can lock it from within and wake up the next morning to your destination. And it costs the price of a typical room in an average guesthouse.
Sleep, little one, close your eyes, mother will sing you a lullaby... Sleep in a jewel cradle, sleep, mother will rock you.
If you don't sleep the midges will go for your eyes and pollen will fall on the cradle....Sleep, close your eyes...

Do it with your best friend, Steve this coming school holidays? Or better still, try at least once in your life time a solo travel; it's life-changing!

I dun think my friend Steve will make it this year as he need to prepare a big 'ang bao' for his buddy wedding dinner this year. Lol as a solo traveller I have to brush up my guts first!
