Re: Why i hate christmas in thailand
that would be cool, but you can buy the comforter like ones here for 500 baht or so, They are really not cost prohibitive, pobly if you made a deal for a dozen you could get a pretty good price.
I know we got a good knock off on coats and shoes for the kids if we bought 30 or 40 at a time.

Re: Why i hate christmas in thailand
So thats probably why my idea has never been done-still-nothing to stop charity organisers setting up donation boxes/stalls in some of the hotels to drum up some cash-or maybe I am wrong in assuming that there is not sufficient response locally ?

Re: Why i hate christmas in thailand
Might be if a WAT or MONK were to put something up they might get some rersponse, but Thai do not seem to be to inclined to give to charity, just like a guy in prison, they will not give him shit, My wife raised hell with me for giving to Gor and His daughter or books to the prison, and especially about writing him a letter with the prison addy and my return addy on it..

Re: Why i hate christmas in thailand
So maybe someone ought to start asking the farang Christmas visitors for a cash contribution via the hotels?
Obviously I am not qualified comment any on your wife's attitude to Gor, but maybe she was frightened that it would be assumed by the gossipy neighbours, via a less than discrete postman, that Gor was a close relative as you were writing to him, and this would affect her job and high status in the community. But of course I am willing to admit I am probably wrong, I don't know too much about the attitudes of the "Thai in the street" to such things

Re: Why i hate christmas in thailand
they would lose face if we got a letter from a prisoner, thats all. And it is not only to GOR but anyone that is in prison..
Discrete,, that means nothing where gossip is concerned, and all Thai that I know live for spreading gossip.

Yeh-sorry-badly phrased-I did not mean Gor in particular but a prisoner in general-I also figured from the forums Thailand is no place to live if you want a quiet reclusive life and want to keep your business your own ! 555
I must admit I would find that hard to adjust to being bit of a reclusive Brit.

Re: Why i hate christmas in thailand
I know what you mean, I am a bit of a recluse myself I guess.
I associate with some Thai here but not any farang really, altho I do have a swiss friend that lives in our village 6 months a year and has a permanent rental in Phuket 6 months a year.
But with a Thai wife and a family next door, I know that everyone in the village knows more about my business than I do, just the Thai way. 555

hate the commercialism of Christmas..not Christmas itself. Marketing, sales and advertising are specialities of the west..Asia is just "catching up". BTW many towns for a recluse in Thailand..Nakhon Sawan is a fine example. Adequately modern, rustically thai (chinese too) and nobody even the cops hassles you. Mostly everyone minds his own business..I don't look forward to X'mas cos' it reminds me of happier times with my family, wife and kids..But the spirit and joy of X'mas is always in my heart. I am a bad christian, but I attend X'mas mid-night mass alone every year wherever I am..from Jerusalem to London, from Bali to Nakhon Sawan and I feel good...

Should of seen nakon sawan in the sixtie's. village like. Main attraction was the center street crossroads. Can't find em any longer. High point was the twist in the river. .. Thankfully, no monster building's have been built. and the lake still live's on. Family, wife and kid's. OK. Nice thought. Like your thought.

Re: Why I hate Christmas in Thailand
Xmas sort of dwindles after so many years here in LOS. The commercialism is a real pain, and of course it is one of the times that I hear from my two older daughters (the other is on their birthdays). A reminder I suppose of happier times past. These days it's just another work day for me, so I neither hate it or expect it, New Year is exactly the same, I can't remember the last new years party I had???
