Is this typical or just bad luck?
I sent my girl a birthday card for her birthday on March 1st. It was in a standard white envelope, sealed and then placed inside a brown "jiffy" type padded envelope. Inside the card was 2 x 1000 baht notes that I had brought back with me from my holiday. It never arrived, the jiffy bag was clearly addressed, typewritten on both back and front. It was posted 10 days before the 1st of March and has never arrived. My suspicion has to be theft either before it left the UK or on route in Thailand. Anyone any thoughts? Does any mail arrive in Thailand unmolested? Should I abolish any thoughts of sending items through the post, and discourage any friends and family from doing the same when I move to Thailand? This is probably the only negative thing that has ever occurred to me in my experience of Thailand.

Re: Is this typical or just bad luck?
In my experience of sending mail regularly to my wife and family in Thailand over nearly four years I have had one letter arrive opened (and something removed) and one letter (a single sheet of paper and a photograph) never arrive.
Many, many other letters and parcels always arrive intact. And with mail out of Thailand a 100% success rate and often quicker than mail to Thailand.

Re: Is this typical or just bad luck?
About two years ago I called the embassy in Bkk to find out if my check was sent on time. I had them sent to a Post box since at the time, the postal service did not reach my home. I lived in the boonies. The reply was affirmative so I called the Post Office. No luck! But about two days later I got a call from ther P.O. asking me to come down and talk to thlem. My check was on the desk, opened with another zip code written on it and the old one crossed off. Aha! skulduggery! The P.O official was very apologetic because he knew if I pushed it, he was out of a cushy job. Someone had noticed the check through the then type envelope plastic window and tried to cash it. No luck. so he sent it back. I have since gone to Direct Deposit with my checks. nuf said.

A few years ago I used to send yen notes through the mail in thick papered envelopes and I think all of them went through.
Then again American Express has informed me that while I can change my address to Thailand when I move there, they will not send any new or replacement cards to Thailand, not even the Amex office there.

Sending cash in mails is never a safe idea in the first place, applied internationally. Sending cash in mails to Thailand is worst. If you really do want to do that, use UPS, DHL or some reputable companies.
And do you think the average Thai mailman will be able to read the English addresses?
Strangely though from experience, you can spell the address wrongly, have the address in the wrong format, and sometimes have no address but just destination company name and your mail will arrive.

I always send anything of (small) value, "International Signed For" as there are a couple of envelopes gone missing

The problem with bank notes, there is certain security features imbedded in the note, one of these security features is a metal strip, these metal strips can be detected by small metal detectors in the postal system, so many postal workers will no, there is money being sent, either by the postal systems monitors or by corrupt postal workers who carry there own metal detector, specially when it is coming from a western country, they are more likely to check for money. It is never advisable to send any Bank Notes through any postal system through out the world.

Next point 2000 baht is to much money to send to your Thai Girlfriend for a birthday present, that could equal a weeks pay, you would not give a weeks pay to a local girlfriend, so don't buy your self a Thai girlfriend, you want to know she likes you, not just hanging around for your money and have a Thai guy on the side as her real boy friend.
