    What to say when...........

On my first visit to Pattaya, Thailand last month (February), I turned and started walking up a small street so that I could get to the next main road to the North of the Beach Road. When all of the sudden, every lady sitting outside what seemed to be pubs serving alcohol or something, started saying to me "hello sexy man where you go, come inside for some drink".

This was around 1:30pm'ish in the afternoon. I was startled to say the least, and started walking faster up the street.

What do you say to them to get them to stop bothering you to go into their bar?

Gor has a page on his site on how to say "no" in Thai. It might help you.

    How about:

    ผมไม่หิวน้ำครับ

Pom mai bpen hiw nam khrap (I'm not thirsty thankyou)

    ผมไม่เป็นผุ้ชายเซ็กซี่หรอก

Pom mai bpen poo chai sek-si rok (Sorry, I'm not a sexy man)

I know how to say "mai oaw krup", which I am told means "I do not want" politely.

But when I said this to some of them, they ran out into the street and grabbed my privates. I stopped saying it because I thought I must be pronouncing it wrong and telling them something I shouldn't?

Needless to say, I didn't go on any more small streets. I stayed on the main streets after that.

I doubt the problem is with your pronunciation. In the rest of Thailand "mai ow khrup" said in a soft voice is a polite refusal of an invitation and would receive a different response.

If you click on the link Richard has provided you can hear the phrase being said in perfect Thai. I'm pretty sure you would not have said anything else inadvertently.

The only trick with "mai ao khrap" is saying it with the right level of softness. My understanding is that if you say it in too firm or loud a voice, it will no longer be a polite refusal, even if you say "khrap".
