Bad Weather: Lightning bolt kills three women in Khon Kaen province

    WEATHER

    Women killed by lightning

A lightning bolt killed three women in Khon Kaen province yesterday as storms damaged hundreds of houses in northern, northeastern and eastern provinces.

Suthin Wongmahajak, 41, Teng Wongmahajak, 47, and Noi Ennokkhum, 50, were killed while collecting chillies in their garden in Ban Hat, tambon Ban Meng, in Nong Rua district of Khon Kaen about 3pm. When a thunderstorm hit the area they took shelter under a tree, which was struck by a thunderbolt.

Heavy hail was reported yesterday afternoon in Nakhon Thai district of Phitsanulok province and also in Song district of Phrae province, where about 300 houses and a corn barn were damaged and trees and road signs uprooted.

People in 11 villages in tambon Hua Ngua of Yang Talat district, Kalasin province, remained without tap water and electricity after a storm on Monday killed one man, injured nine others and damaged about 600 houses.

In Trat province, a storm hit Muang, Khao Saming and Bo Rai districts, damaging at least 20 houses and fruit crops.

The weatherman predicts storms in upper Thailand, especially the Northeast, for the next two days.

Heavy rain caused chaos in Bangkok this afternoon too, it poured down around 2pm and resulted in a spate of road accidents including at least one 9 car pile up. Another accident in the Huay Khwang tunnel on Ratchada Rd combined with a set of traffic lights near Robinson's Department Store going haywire, saw the whole area in gridlock for nearly an hour.
