Re: Chinese girlfriend
Paul, enough. Especially with the new people who don't know that this is your standard broken record.

Re: Chinese girlfriend
Janus. If you hope to learn customs and traditions all in a day, well, not going to happen. Customs of other nationalities are complicated. Our own customs are complicated and constantly go thru flux. And you can be married to a thai, or lao or a chinese for 30 years and still not know or understand all customs and traditions. I would think lthat if you took things slow. Like learn a little here and there, you'll be fine. Thais lao and chinese are friendly people.

Re: Chinese girlfriend
Marriage preparation is a private affair between your family and hers. If you follow the local tradition, her family and the local folks will respect you because you respect their customs and culture.

Re: Chinese girlfriend
The sinsod is a highly complicated matter. I think if you look in old threads I think u find plenty of arguments from all sides.
Imo intercultural relationships is about giving and taking, like in all relationships.
That said my advice is to relax and let common sense prevail.
Everyone will understand u dont know about their customs.

Re: Chinese girlfriend
I've talked with Janusz over pm and he actually has a lot of questions, and a good intention to have a positive relationship. His first questions about culture were probably too braod. Let me try and help him out and share some questions we came up with over pm.
What does a "date" look like in Thailand?
Is "dating" different in Thailand than what you've experienced in your home country?
What kind of relationships do you have with the family of the person you are dating?
What are some relationship pitfalls to avoid?

Re: Chinese girlfriend
- holding hands should be ok unless the parents are the super traditional types who still wear cheong san. Even in Western countries I suppose you don't feel up your girlfriend at her parents house in front of her parents right?
- Never heard about the right or left hand thing. I suggest both hands then.
- Ya. Smiles always work. Learn some mandarin if you want to impress the parents too.
