"Mr Samak said tourism stimulation policies were necessary in light of the falling tourist numbers in Chiang Mai, the gateway to the region, during the Songkran festival in April".

TAT will no doubt be given an even bigger budget to promote the sacred cow of tourism, nothing new there, but wouldn't it make more sense first to try and find out WHY people are not flocking to the North anymore? The reasons have been well explained in this thread.

IMHO the anti government protests in Bangkok have nothing to do with it.

Samak has to blame someone for the downturn in tourism in particular and the nation's woes in general-not being able to see further than the end of his nose, and thus not his own mistakes, he blames his enemies.
The fact that tourism receives the 4th smallest budget and the North is traditionally under funded by any government is not, of course, a reality in Samak's strange world.

Absolutely brilliant! While Samak is banging on about attracting more tourists, his Ministry of Tourism is now proposing to hike up the "on arrival" Visa fee by 180%!!!
    Smart coordinated thinking there, guys!!
