CORRUPTION : Network will press Wallop fraud case

    CORRUPTION

Network will press Wallop fraud case

    BANGKOK POST REPORTERS

A women's network plans to submit documents it says relate to alleged acts of fraud and bribery involving Wallop Ploytubtim to the National Counter Corruption Commission (NCCC).

Mr Wallop was reinstated as permanent secretary of the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security recently after a disciplinary investigation against him was called off.

Thicha na Nakorn, a women's rights activist and director of the Ban Kanchanaphisek youth detention centre, said copies of the documents would also be handed to the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), continuing its weeks-long anti-government rally at Makkhawan Rangsan bridge, and the opposition Democrat party.

Mr Wallop had been under investgation for alleged sexual misconduct with female staff. The inquiry was demanded by the network during the Surayud Chulanont administration.

The network has now decided to pursue the corruption case.

Ms Thicha alleged there was an irregular cash flow in bank accounts held by a C-8 official close to Mr Wallop, raising suspicions about possible abuse of authority and bribery involving the permanent secretary. The C-8 official reportedly has six bank accounts holding large sums of money, ranging from six to seven figures, she said.

Late last year, Mr Wallop was transferred to an inactive post at the PM's Office after allegations of sexual abuse, dereliction of duty, and corruption involving state subsidies for underprivileged families were made against him.

Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej reinstated him after Deputy Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat called off the disciplinary investigation, accepting a petition from Mr Wallop that the probe was not legitimate because it was set up by the military-installed government.

Ms Thicha said the network would press Social Development and Human Security Minister Chavarat Charnvirakul to re-investigate Mr Wallop.

So now he is under Samak's wing and all is forgiven and he can keep all the money he wants in any number of bank accounts he wishes to have..

In Australian English (I'm not sure about elsewhere) to "wallop" someone means to bash them. So Wallop seems a rather appropriate name for this particular character.

Same in UK-it is also an old, and now seldom used, word for Beer. as in "a pint of wallop"

Same in US -- although it does harken back to older language. I think my Dad received some wallops in his day.
