PAD seeks new ways to oust Samak

The People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) is planning new tactics to oust Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej and his cabinet.

Coordinator Suriyasai Katasila said a change of plan was necessary because the government continued to ignore the PAD's demands since protesters laid siege to Government House last Friday.

A source said the PAD had been countered by Interior Minister Chalerm Yubamrung's "secret order" to provincial governors countrywide to support rallies of tambon and village leaders against anti-government demonstrators.

The order prompted tambon and village heads in many provinces to meet governors yesterday, the source said.

The meetings were to pass on their messages of support to the government demanding the PAD stop its rally.

"The PAD only wants to expel the government without respecting the rules of democracy," said Siri Suasan, head of the Lad Ya tambon administration organisation in Muang district of Kanchanaburi.

In Tak, village head Suriya Makerd led 300 tambon and village heads and hilltribe people to meet the governor.

Counter-PAD rallies were also reported in Nakhon Ratchasima, Chanthaburi, Trat and Chiang Rai.

Around 1,000 people in Chiang Rai announced the province was a "PAD-free zone", vowing to block its supporters from entering the area.

Group leaders, including Somyos Prueksakasemsuk, former leader of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship, made speeches criticising the PAD in front of a school in Chiang Rai municipality on Tuesday. Effigies of PAD leaders were hung and burned.

But there are not only government supporters in the northernmost province. Banners attacking the Samak Sundaravej government were also put up in many areas in Muang district.

The people who did this could not fail to understand the historical significance of the act. Anyone who wants to take Thailand back down that path cannot has seriously lost the plot.
