CU lecturers appeals for "Da Torpedo"'s release

The Criminal Court is expected to complete its appellate review within seven days following Thursday's filling of an appeal for the temporary release of activist Darunee Chanchoengsilapakul, also known as Da Torpedo, who is facing a lese majeste charge.

Chulalongkorn University lecture Suthachai Yimprasert said he lodged the appeal as bondsman and friend of the suspect. He said he used his academic position as the bond.

On Wednesday, Suthachai tried but failed to seek the release of Da Torpedo. The court rejected the bail application on grounds of flight risk.

Court refuses to grant Da Torpedo bail

(BangkokPost.com) - The Court of Appeals refused to grant Daranee Charnchoengsilpakul, alas Da Torpedo, bail on Thursday.

Ms Daranee, a member of the pro-government United Front of Democracy against Dictatorship, was arrested on charges of committing lese majeste in a recent speech she gave at Sanam Luang.

The court refused to give her bail because the case is sensitive and her crime is serious.

Isn't strange that Thaksin and Pojaman Shinawatra can not only get bail for all the charges they face-to the extent of leaving the country at will-, but, in Pojaman's case, continue to get immediate bail after conviction on one of them, whereas Daranee Charnchoengsilpakul, alias Da Torpedo, un-convicted on a charge of Lese Majeste-probably the most misused and abused charge in the Thai legal system- can not get bail-despite a respected academic putting his career on the line to underwrite and guarantee such as it is considered Ms Charnchoengsilpakul will flee the country (like the Shinwataras did?) .

Some less charitable person might assume this is because Mr and Mrs Shinawatra are friends of the government, whereas Ms Charnchoengsilpakul is certainly not.......

Probably-outside of her accusers and an equally probably very tight-lipped original audience-only Sondhi Limthongkul-and, as we already know, he has been "busted" for referring to it.

Best not to discuss it too much here, maybe.

The lese majeste law in Thailand has been the subject of a great deal of discussion in international fora. But I am made to understand that much of this material under discussion has been censored in Thailand.

By the way, I was watching a utube video the other day where somebody was making a deep apology for having made a video previously with possible lese majeste content.
