Isan PPP members say 'gang of four' betraying party

A "gang of four" close to Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej is working to raise funds to ensure its own political future that could even see a new political party being set up in time for a fresh general election, People Power party (PPP) MPs in the Northeast are saying.

PPP MP for Roi Et Sakda Khongphet told reporters yesterday that someone close to Mr Samak who was a member of the "gang of four" had recently flown to Hong Kong to discuss "vested interests" worth billions of baht from a Transport Ministry project for the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority, the city bus agency, to lease 6,000 gas-fueled, air-conditioned buses, which is worth more than 100 billion baht over 10 years.

He questioned why some figures in the government were trying to rush the bus scheme through so fast even though it had not been announced in the government's policy platform.

He also wondered why the government was not pushing water supply and village fund projects that it previously promised to its grassroots supporters.

Mr Sakda said the "gang of four" was also pushing the implementation of development projects through this year's 15-billion-baht budget of the Local Administration Department.

"Interior officials at the Local Administration Department are afraid of being transferred if they resist the orders of the 'gang of four' which is trying to cash in on the projects.

"They are building up their influence to strengthen their bargaining power for a future election. They're preparing to set up a new political party. This is betrayal of the party," said Mr Sakda who is a member of the Isan Pattana faction of the PPP.

He threatened to report the matter to the National Counter Corruption Commission unless Mr Samak stepped in.

Faction leader and PPP MP for Nakhon Phanom Paichit Sriworakhan yesterday denied moves by his faction members were aimed at demanding any cabinet portfolios. He said his faction knew the government's days were numbered.

Democrat party members continued to accuse the government of failing to resolve serious problems facing the nation due to mistakes made in its cabinet reshuffle and the prime minister's ongoing efforts to amend the constitution.

Democrat secretary-general Suthep Thaugsuban yesterday attacked the selection of former national police chief Pol Gen Kowit Wattana to become the new interior minister.

Mr Suthep said Pol Gen Kowit was actually not Mr Samak's choice. Mr Samak had selected someone else who had accepted the portfolio.

But the "de facto owner" of Mr Samak's PPP rejected the nominee. The "owner" preferred Pol Gen Kowit although Mr Samak doubted Pol Gen Kowit's capabilities.

Democrat spokesman Buranat Samutharak Samutharak said yesterday that besides the appointment of Tej Bunnag as foreign minister, the latest cabinet reshuffle had not put anyone in place who was capable of solving the urgent problems of the country.

Re: Isan PPP members say 'gang of four' betraying party

I am naturally interested in the water projects in Issan and this piece has my attention.

The only flaw in the reporting by the Bangkok Post is they did not list the names of the "gang of four". My read on the article sounds more like 'somebody here said something about somebody there' but did not say who the somebody-there was. Risky journalism as it is presented.

Phantoms have a way of becoming real and the Post should have seen the weakness of this story.

The only "gang of four" I am familiar with are the Drug Lords in the Golden Triangle. I think they might be Chinese though (????). You do not think somebody is using that name to instill the fear associated with Drug Trafficking into persons close to Samak. That would be considered bias reporting and I am sure the Post is well above that.

Does anybody know the four names that are actually being referred too?

I found this article @ Thaindian.com. The names still remain a mystery though.

Esan Development group says it can expose Gang of Four

August 4th, 2008 - 2:08 pm ICT by Amrit Rashmisrisethi

People Power Party MP of Roi-Et province Sakda Kongpetch (ѡ ྪ) who is part of the E-san Development group affirmed that there is sufficient evidence to expose the Gang of Four which have allegedly received billions of baht in benefits from bus projects of the Ministry of Transport. The E-san Development group convened last night to solidify their information and pointed out that the corrupt gang is seeking to establish a new political party as they view the PPP is becoming unstable.
