Police in Thailand have arrested a 60-year-old Perth man after he allegedly shot dead an American tourist in the northern city of Chiang Mai.

William Thomas Douglas is expected to be charged with pre-meditated murder after allegedly firing three shots at 46-year-old American Garry Poretsky.

Mr Douglas is alleged to have fired three shots with an 11-millimetre pistol, hitting Mr Poretsky in the head and in the body.

The incident took place at a bar in Chiang Mai, which is one of Thailand's most popular tourist spots.

A witness says the two men had been drinking together for several hours when an argument began.

Mr Douglas gave himself up to police yesterday.

He has lived in Thailand for more than 30 years.

Australian consular officials have visited Mr Douglas in the police cells in Chiang Mai.

He is expected to appear before the courts tomorrow.

Aussie man jailed in Thailand over tourist's murder

A 60-year-old Australian man has been sentenced to jail in Thailand for the murder of an American tourist earlier this year.

William Thomas Douglas will serve two years and nine months for killing Gary Poretsky of Hawaii in March.

The pair had been drinking at a restaurant in the northern city of Chiang Mai and in the early hours of the morning, got into an argument.

Douglas took out a gun and shot Poretsky dead.

He was initially sentenced to five and a half years in prison, but the court reduced his term because he confessed.

It also determined that the murder was not premeditated.

Douglas was originally from Perth, but had been a long time resident of Thailand.

He will serve out his sentence in Chiang Mai.

so, this guy got a lighter sentence for bloody murder than Gor got for drug possession.
