    How do you say...in Thai?

I mean, how do I ask this generic question for any English word? As a total beginner, many of conversation attempts with Thai friends or at a restaurant start with my attempt to say a Thai word or phrase, followed by a puzzled: "what?", followed by laughter at my terrible pronunciation.

    From thai-language.com, I've found:
    เรียกว่าอะไร (riiak waa a-rai)
    and
เรียกว่าอะไรในภาษาไทย (riiak waa a rai nai phaa saa thai)

Can I simply say an English word in front of either of those, or use นี่ (nee) if I can point? Or is there a better way to ask this question entirely?

    I usually say:

    นี่ภาษาไทยเรียกว่าอะไร

Nee paasaa Thai riak waa arai

    I'm usually understood.

However, I might not be saying it correctly so wait and see what a Thai speaker recommends.

When you are trying to say something and you cannot point to it and ask what it is called or you want to know how to say certain things, words or sentences you can ask how to say things in Thai by using the following examples:

You can say this...ถ้าจะถาม(or พูด)ว่า(fill in the blank with English)จะพูดยังไงเป็นภาษาไทย

    or you could say ประโยคนี้.....พูดเป็นภาษาไทยว่ายังไง
or you could say ประโยคนี้... พูดยังไงเป็นภาษาไทย

When you can point to something you can ask นี้เรียกว่าอะไรเป็นภาษาไทย

    Hope this is helpful.

That is very helpful, thank you!

Difficult for me to parse through, and although I probably shouldn't ask this follow up as it is way, way beyond my level, but what is the difference between
ยังไง and อะไร in these examples? Like the difference between how and what?

Yep, ยังไง is "how", and อะไร is "what".
