    Re: Ratchaphruek Floral Show 2008

We just received the following press release from TAT. Originally they were going to fly us up there with members of the press on Monday but unfortunately it was cancelled.

ROYAL FLORA RATCHAPRUEK 2008 HELD TO COMMEMORATE HIS MAJESTY KING BHUMIBOL’S 81ST BIRTHDAY ANNIVERSARY

Bangkok, 3 December 2008- The Royal Flora Ratchapruek 2008 to commemorate His Majesty King Bhumibol’s 81st Birthday Anniversary will be held from 1-10 December, 2008, at the Chalermprakiat Ratchapruek Park 2006 in Chiang Mai.

The Ministry of Sports and Tourism, the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, together with the Chiang Mai Provincial Administration, will join forces in hosting the event with highlights including the official opening of the Chalermprakiat Ratchapruek Park and the grand celebrations for His Majesty the King’s birthday on 5 December.

Following the overwhelming success of the 92-day internationally-acclaimed International Horticulture Exposition for His Majesty the King, the Royal Flora Ratchapruek 2006 at the Royal Agricultural Research Centre in Mae Hia sub-district, Mueang district, Chiang Mai, the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives was granted the green light from the cabinet to have the research centre developed into a cultural, recreational and agro-tourism attraction. The centre has been renamed the Chalermprakiat Ratchapruek Park.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), one of the key stockholders in charge of the floral festival this year, has allocated a 25 million Baht budget to support the organization of the event.

According to Mrs. Phornsiri Manoharn, Governor of TAT, the Royal Flora Ratchapruek 2006 was so successful that it contributed 27 billion Baht to the North’s economy. This year’s Royal Flora Ratchapruek is organized to commemorate His Majesty the King’s 81st birthday, to mark the official opening of the park, and also to help stimulate the economy and the tourism industry of Chiang Mai.

“Visitors will be amazed by the different floral presentations, the grand exhibitions promoting Royal Projects initiated by His Majesty King Bhumibol and several other projects by the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives. They will also enjoy music and cultural performances throughout the ten-day celebration. Most importantly, visitors will have the honour of participating in the grand celebrations for His Majesty the King’s birthday on 5 December,” Mrs. Phornsiri said.

One of the activities during the 10-day festival will be the celebration procession for the Chalermprakiat Buddha images to be permanently enshrined in the park. The Buddha images were made from an enormous amount of bhodi tree leaves that the Thai people presented to His Majesty the King in full reverence during their visits to the Royal Flora Ratchapruek 2006.

The floral festival will be held in full scale covering 7 amazing areas of the Park just like the Royal Flora Ratchapruek held two years ago. Visitors are encouraged to get a passport upon entering the entrance. Those who have collected seven stamps — one from each of the amazing zones will have a chance to win big prizes including tour packages to different destinations in Thailand.

The grand opening on 1 December will be attended by members of the cabinet including the Sports and Tourism Minister, and presided over by the Prime Minister. The highlight on the first night will be the 399 lanterns flown into the sky to mark the grand opening of the Festival. Fabulous fireworks displays will cap each of the 10 nights and leave audiences mesmerized. On 5 December, a 9-series grand fireworks display will be the special not-to-be-missed spectacle of the event.

TAT expects 200,000 visitors from all parts of the country to attend the 10-day festival which will generate at least 1,140million Baht for Chiang Mai’s economy.
