Thailand helping Tesco stay in the black

This is cobbled from a few reports but it shows how well Tesco is doing here with it's Tesco-Lotus venture, especially when compared with elsewhere.

Tesco reports record £3 billion profit

Tesco, Britain's biggest supermarket chain, posted record annual pre-tax profits of £2.95 billion today and revealed that it had notched up more than £1 billion in sales for each week of the year.

The group said today that sales had increased by 13.5 per cent to £59.4 billion over the 52 weeks to February 28. Underlying profits before tax rose by 10 per cent to £3.13 billion.

Trading losses in the US, where Tesco launched its Fresh & Easy stores in 2007, more than doubled from £62 million to £142 million.

An “exceptional” year in Malaysia and growth in Thailand helped offset a “sharp deterioration” in Japan and slower sales and profit growth in Europe, Tesco said.

BBC showed a Thai check-out girl at work this evening while reporting on this story.

Oh how I miss the courtesy and that wai!

I think Tesco have done well in adapting their market plan while in Thailand. They also do a lot of charity work for the local community. The smaller Tesco Express shops are also good. Near us they have also opened a Tesco Lotus Plus which is a mini shopping mall. This is the first in the country.

Tesco has taken the fight up to CP's 7/11 stores very well. We now have 3 Tesco express shops within a kilometre or so, along with four 7/11's.

Well it's good to see not every one is going down hill.

CP are marketing geniuses. I was at the airport last night picking up a friend from Melbourne. It looks like CP have broken the FamilyMart monopoly on minimarts in the terminal building. A brand spanking new 7/11 has just opened a few metres from the "Meeting Point" There is a FamilyMart almost next door but a little further away from the meeting place. Last night the 7/11 had four times as many customers as FM.
CP are also opening small shops all over the city, selling their own CP branded fresh and frozen food products. The shops are called CP FreshMart. The floors, refrigerators and freezers are kept spotlessly clean, The shops are bright and well lit. The shop assistants are easy on the eye as well
