Muang Mai market in Chiang Mai - photos

I took these photos at Muang Mai market in Chiang Mai. It is by the river, near the American Consulate. If you would like to buy 20 kilos of fresh cabbage, or feed a school with bananas, this is the place to come to. There are large trucks bringing in produce from all over the province. A nice place to take photos. These were mostly taken at the beginning of July, some prices are different now.

I'm wondering what fruits and vegetables you can recognise / identify I can name all of them in some language, but there are gaps in my Thai as well as in my English. Click on the photos for larger views.

These two were taken a few years ago. Can you recognise the special occasion coming up (first photo)?

oh you are way too quick - I thought it would take at least 10 minutes for someone to see it and come up with an answer
yes, this is the place to come to if you would like to make your own krathong and need ingredients. they also sell ready-made krathongs. amazing, detailed, imaginative ones like this peacock.

I also found one of my favourite photos in the meantime, also taken at this market. Old ladies still go home from the market in a samlor. You also see these very old men at festival parades and sometimes carrying around tourists. I don't think they will last very long though.

I have seen one peddling around CM the passenger seat loaded with bags of polythene, plastic bottles and drinks cans-obviously given up trying to compete with the tuk-tuks.
A few days later I saw one several miles outside the city heading towards it. We were going in the opposite direction and soon passed a recycling centre. Probably the same old man.

Cruising around in a samlor is a far more relaxing way of seeing the sights than being hurled around at max speed by a tuk-tuk driver who thinks he is Michael Schumacher/Jenson Button/Louis Hamilton

I am so big I would hate to have an old man pedalling to get me around it is just not right.
though I admit I once took a samlor - in Kanchanaburi, when there were no taxis around and I had a bus to catch. it was just 1.5 km or so but still too much for my peace of mind. the old man was really really nice, he was actually around during the war, and spoke really good English too... I ended up giving a big tip.

Don't forget they are used to pedalling two Thais around-so I guess in some cases -mine particularly-2 Thais is going to equal 1 Farang ,and it is not as though you sit in the back with a whip! I think these guys are glad of the business-I have seen so few of them on the road, I can only imagine business is not as good as it could be as people want to go places quickly.
    Big tip?-certainly.

Just checked my (out of date) Nancy Chandler map -that market is not marked -I am guessing it is on the river side of the circular road-roundabout? of Charoen Prathet where it joins with Wichayanon?

I marked it on the Chiang Mai map

    http://map.chiangmaiguidebook.com/

I put the pin approximately in the middle. the market takes up the are between Wichayanon road, Muang Samut road, and the river. not sure how far it goes north in the small alleys. the big building southeast of the pin is some municipal office, and there is a small fire station too - you can see the fire engines in the satellite view.
