    Can get the literal translation but not sure how to "interpret" it.

    Hi guys, this is my first post here. I'd like to say that I've been browsing for a while and found loads of useful information already but now I need a bit of help:(

    I'm only a beginner at reading thai and I got a text message from my friend which says ไม่มีอะไรพูดแล้วนอกจาก.....

    This is the part of the text I don't understand the part after ... I understand.

    My literal translation is ไม่มีอะไร = It's nothing. But does this mean "I have nothing" or "It's not a problem" similar to "Don't worry about it", or does it mean something entirely different.

    พูด = speak

    แล้ว has been giving me a headache recently. I know it means "already" and that it can be used to indicate past tense(?) but I have no clue how to use or understand it's use in this manner.

    นอกจาก = It's just...

    As I said I can't interpret this into something that I can understand, can anyone help?

    Cheers

    "nothing else to say, other than..."

    In this sentence แล้ว indicates that something (พูด) is completed.

    I hope that helps.

    Thanks. I'll try and have a closer look at it and try and get my head round it. It's one thing being able to translate the words but another trying to piece them together and understand them. Hopefully it's just one of those things that "clicks".

    5tash is right on, but I thought I'd jump in to clarify a bit more.

    ไม่มีอะไร verb แล้ว is a good pattern to know and use. You can put any verb in there to make a sentence:

    ไม่มีอะไรกินแล้ว There's nothing to eat
    ไม่มีอะไรทำแล้ว There's nothing to do

    You said that:

    My literal translation is ไม่มีอะไร = It's nothing
    Without a determined subject the implication here is "There's nothing" rather than It's nothing. It's nothing implies that the matter is small... but There's nothing just states that the matter doesn't exist.

    นอกจาก = It's just...
    The literal translation would be 'outside from' which in English is similar to aside from, or other than.

    Hope that helps... yes, it will eventually begin to "click", but don't forget to bring your questions here as we all learn from them.

    ไม่มีอะไรพูดแล้วนอกจาก

    แล้ว in this case I'd say means something like 'at this point in time'

    นอกจาก - other than

    ไม่มีอะไร - there's nothing

    'It's nothing' would be more like ไม่เป็นอะไร
