What's the best way to clean a stone mortar and pestle?

What's the best way to clean a mortar and pestle made of stone?
I had been using dishwashing soap, but am now wondering if that would linger in the stone???

What type of stone is it? Granite (usual for pestle and mortar)?
If so-you will not have a problem-providing you rinse well of course,
Other stones may be more porous and take on the taste/scent of soap

Hmmm....good question! It's gray-ish greeny black. I assume it's the standard granite. Heavey....but the texture on the outside is rougher, so I do wonder if it is porous.

I have an obviously porous pizza stone and was told that I should choose whether it is a sweet or savory stone and never mix, as the flavors would eventually stay over time. I didn't know if I'd have to "choose" with the mortar and pestle, too.

How to Clean a Stone Mortar Pestle

    Step 1
A stone mortar and pestle can be used for grinding dry ingredients, such as spices or nuts, and also for wet ingredients such as pestos and sauces. Because they are stone, they do not pick up any odors.

    Step 2
When you are finished using your mortar and pestle, you need only to place it in the sink and run hot water in it.

    Step 3
If necessary, you can use a mild detergent, but make sure you rinse thoroughly. If you have a basalt mortar and pestle, the rough surface may hold soap.

Hmmm...it might be, but now I'm wondering if it is bassalt. Do you know if bassalt mortars are commonly used in Thailand or is granite more commonly used?

Most searches for bassalt mortar and pestle throw up references to Mexico. But that doesn't mean anything one way or the other...

Soak them in Clorox overnight and they will be clean as new. Ka nee khap.

Pailin, I clean mine with hot soapy water and rinse well. Back home that's all we do. From time to time here, I put the pestle in the dish washer if I want to get rid of the smell of garlic, onion, coriander root....etc.
