Old Bang Phli Market Fair 2009

The Old Bang Phli Market Fair 2009 has now started and will run every weekend until Sunday 27th October 2009. This is a good opportunity to see the traditional way of life of the Bang Phli people living along the canal. Every weekend there will be special activities that include folk plays, sea boxing, boat tours, traditional sword fighting and local food. These are just a few of the pictures that I took this morning. I have many more to share with you including a couple of videos. If you are in the area this month then I strongly urge you to come and visit the province that is no longer featured in the Lonely Planet Thailand guidebook.

When Mr. Kwanchai Wongnitikorn, the Governor of Samut Prakan Province, first arrived at Wat Bang Phli Yai Nai he went to pay respect to Luang Pho To which is the most respected Buddha image in Bang Phli.

I have now uploaded the video of the opening ceremony that I shot this morning. There is one more video to come of the alms round by boat. I am planning on going back to the market tomorrow and will try and shoot some more videos for you.

This next set of pictures shows the governor being led towards the opening ceremony by dancers and long drums.

I will be posting many more pictures tomorrow and hopefully another video.

This is the continuation of the opening ceremony for the Old Bang Phli Market Festival. The gentleman on the left in the traditional white shirt is Pattanapong Chongrakdee (พัฒนพงศ์ จงรักดี), the city mayor for Bang Phli. To the right of him is the Governor for Samut Prakan.

This is the city mayor and his team.

This is the governor and his team. During opening ceremonies they always face each other like this to make speeches.

After the opening ceremony, the governor was escorted through the narrow market buildings. Along the way, he stopped to chat with locals and taste some of the food.

This is the local museum at the market which is really impressive with a lot of information (though mainly in Thai).

These are some general shots of the people who live and work in the market. I have also shot a video showing what the market is like.

This is my last set of pictures. I went again the next day on the Sunday to take some more pictures. This is the city mayor who was there again watching one of the shows. There was no other media there and he was really doing this for the people rather than as a show for the press.

At the weekend, you can join boat tours. I did one last year which you can read here.

There will be boat races on October 2nd on this canal. I saw several teams practising.

It is overall a good riverside market and well worth visiting this month.

Re: Old Bang Phli Market Fair 2009

On Saturday I went back to the old market at Bang Phli just to see how the festival compared to the opening weekend. I must admit I was a little disappointed. None of the vendors on boats could be seen and the sea boxing pole had been taken down. The only special event still continuing were some people singing on stage. I really think they should make better use of the canal by making it part of the attraction. Though I guess foreign tourists are more thrilled by the floating market than Thai tourists. To them it is just hot and makes sense to be under cover in the market. They do have boats for hire, but weirdly these are very much out of place as they are in the shape of things like swans etc. an old market should have more authentic attractions if it wants to keep its charm.

Having said that, it is still worth going as the market has a lot of good food on offer. We ate our meal there and bought plenty of desserts and curries for the next day too. We also went on a boat tour. You can see the video here:
