Any Interesting, Untouristy Places To Visit In BKK
Hi all,
Anyone knew of anywhere interesting to go in BKK, away from the usual tourist crowd eg Khao San, Suan Lum etc so as to get the real atmosphere of the true local-hangout in the evening/night?
We are not thinking of watering holes =)
Thanks =)

Why don't you try this walk.

It looks interesting and I would imagine not many foreign tourists would be there.

HI
Do you speak Thai ?
when you get away from the tourist area's,
Bangkok is just like any other big city.
the people work all day then come home, eat, shop, and sleep
If they go out it is to shop, movies visit friends and family or to bars or karokee.
but like any city after 11PM or 12 the only thing open will be bars and night clubs

Do you like the chicken and rice dish, ข้าวมันไก่ ?? You could visit the all-night competing ข้าวมันไก่ restaurants in Pratunam. (across from Pratunma plaza/market -- and opposite central world)
Different restaurants there are known for the different aspects of the dish. One will have the best chicken, one will have the best rice, one the best soup.... just ask a Thai friend and they'll share their favorite.

Do you like Thai Boxing? I don't really, but I didn't go to watch the sport, I went to watch the people watching the sport. Fascinating! Avoid the tourist packages because you'll just be sitting with other tourists. Buy a regular ticket. At Lumpini, any seat is a good seat as the place is relatively small. I haven't been to Rachadamnoern.
There is also a small, off the beaten path, night market south on Charoen Krung...I want to say at about soi 64 (take sky train to Saphan Thaksin then bus #1 until you see it on your right hand side)
There are some great late-night river restaurants along Rama 3 near soi 54-58that are great.... actually, along the whole river, the river restaurants are nice.

Pailin I though that foreigners were only allowed to buy the inflated prices tickets.
We can just buy the normal tickets and sit with everybody else?
That's something good to know.

=) I have not heard of the night market south on Charoen Krung, and it does not even seem to be listed on guide books =) That sounds particularly interesting; I always feel markets are always the best way to get into the local vibes anywhere
Thanks so much! :-) Any idea what is the earliest time it opens? And what time it closes? Does it have any name in case we need to take a cab instead of enjoying the local way (bus/train)?
I will try the night river restaurants too, but the market you recommended is certainly top on our list! :-)
If the Thai boxing is not too much gory, we may think about trying keke
Cos I have known for a number of years already that the Thai boxing is often lauded as one of the authentic 'must-see' of Thai lifestyle, but I just imagine that it may be too hard to stomach when the fighters got landed an especially hard punch or kick with blood and all etc keke :-)

Are there anymore of those makeshift wooden stages on the streets with local entertainers catering to the local crowd with songs, jokes etc?
