Re: A street selling rocks and gemstones i missed...
In Oz you can go on organised "fossicking" tours to the places where the stones are to be found. Participants fossick around the diggings and in some areas you can pan in the streams for gold.
To Fossick.
To search for gold, especially by reworking washings or waste piles.
To rummage or search around, especially for a possible profit.
Opal mining at Coober Pedy and Lightning Ridge... Andamooka... Hmm.. lots of strange guys up there. It's like the wild wild West!! The story goes that a tax inspector went up there once to try to get the locals to pay income tax. He was never seen again. It was just a story ...Or was it??

Re: A street selling rocks and gemstones i missed...
I have many fond childhood memories of tromping thru the woods picking up small geodes and any rock that caught my fancy. When I found a round geode I'd take it home and hit it with a hammer to see what treasure was inside. Nowadays I am content with going to North Carolina's many rock, gem, jewelry & bead shows. Many of the dealers are from Southeast Asia or India.
I've been lusting for an amethyst cathedral geode for many years now. I'd like one about 3 feet tall. Every year the price gets higher and my budget gets shorter!
The last few times I was in Thailand I was told that most of what few gems were left were being exported, and nearly everything was heat treated.

Thailand Blue sapphires are routinely heat treated to enhance their colour from a pale to a deep blue to mimic Sri Lankan top quality sapphires-I have watched part of the process- and others to create orange sapphires.

To get back to the original question: where is the street that sells minerals and rocks.
Suggest a visit to:
Minerals and Rocks Museum
Rama IV Road opposite the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Tel: 245-6210
The exhibit is divided into two categories: geology and mineral resources. No fee. Open Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
and ask there."There is no such thing as totally useless information"

Re: A street selling rocks and gemstones i missed...
Apparently it was the Sri Lankans who pioneered heat treatment to enhance colour so much so that it's acceptable practice whereas......the mother of all heat treatment - Beryllium Treatment which was pioneered by the Thais can turn an ugly sapphire into a nice looking Padparascha sapphire or a so called "pigeon red" ruby. It's unacceptable practice. That's where people get scammed. It's amazing what people come up with nowadays.

The only place I know that sells kunzite, tourmalines etc., (and yes, they are from Afghanistan) is under Naraiphan. Very easy to find - opposite Central World, and close to Gaysorn Plaza.
