    no idea about slang. literally: small elephant or baby elephant. it is used in kids' storybooks this way. I also had a student whose nickname was Chang Noi.

    I suspected this could be the solution, I only added my info here because to me that seems to suggest that this is not very bad or frequent? I mean if someone is given this nickname, and I never heard anyone, kid or adult, laughing about it, was it only because they are so nice and polite? or are the parents big time losers because the child will be ostracised for this name once he grows up a little more?
    btw -what about Chang Yai, then?

    I have a friend who has the nickname "changnoi" and she said it meant "little elephant", but it also means another thing in slang, and she was ashamed to tell me what it is, so I supposes that it must be "penis" as it could not tell me what is ...

    'chang noi' is only use for young boys, it's a cute and polite word to use with children.
