    Ordering Coffee Help! :)

    Hi,

I'm a Starbucks addict. Overpriced coffee discussions aside I'm trying to finish a Starbucks order completely in thai. It does wonders for my confidence when I can refrain from switching to english when I panick at the confused look on the other person's face. The requirement is that I sound as close to a native thai ordering as possible and not a thai grammar dictionary. For instance a friend said I could use ถ้วยขนาดกลาง when asking for a medium size cup, but after pressing a little more about what they would actually say she said she would probably use something like สายกลาง where สาย(sp?) is a english borrowed word I can't seem to find in a dictionary.

For example, lets say I wanted to order a hot cafe latte in a medium cup made with soy milk and an extra shot of espresso.

    Vocabulary Used:

    คาเฟ่ลาเต้ Cafe Latte
    ร้อน Hot
    ถ้วย Cup
    เอสเพรสโซ่ Espresso
    น้ำเต้าหู้ Soy Milk
    ช็อต Shot

Id like a medium hot cafe latte.
    ขอคาเฟ่ลาเต้ร้อนสายกลาง ถ้วย 1.

Can you add an extra shot of espresso?
    ใส่เอสเพรสโซ่ช็อตได้ไหม orณ maybe ใส่เอสเพรสโซ่ช็อตอีกด้วยนะ

    Can you use soy milk?
    ใช้น้ำเต้าหู้ได้ไหม

    Make it hot please.
    ทำไห้ร้อนด้วยนะ

Can you make it with soy milk?
    ทำไห้กับน้ำเต้าหู้

    Drink it here(not take away).
    ดื่มที่นี่

Also is there a difference in classifier between the ceramic cup and the paper cup used? In other words when do I use แก้ว or ถ้วย?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Note: I left off ครับ or ค่ะ/คะ on purpose.

    Thanks!!!!

    Eric

use something like สายกลาง where สาย(sp?) is a english borrowed word I can't seem to find in a dictionary.

it's actually "size" but thai ppl omit the "ze" ending. so it becomes ..."sai" pronounced as ไซ้

hot cafe latte in a medium cup made with soy milk and an extra shot of espresso.
    If I were you, i would say..."คาเฟ่ลาเต้ร้อน แก้วกลาง/ไซส์กลาง ใช้นมถั่วเหลือง แล้วก็เพิ่มเอสเปรสโซ่หนึ่งช็อต"

น้ำเต้าหู้ Soy Milk I think for this case, นมถั่วเหลือง is a better word for Soy Milk. Personally, น้ำเต้าหู้ sounds like soy milk sold with ปาท่องโก๋ (fried chinese bread) in the morning

Id like a medium hot cafe latte.
    ขอคาเฟ่ลาเต้ร้อนสายกลาง ถ้วย 1. สาย is "size" pronounced ไซ้

Can you add an extra shot of espresso?
    ใส่เอสเพรสโซ่ช็อตได้ไหม orณ maybe ใส่เอสเพรสโซ่ช็อตอีกด้วยนะ should use "ใส่เอสเพรสโซ่ช็อตเพิ่มด้วยนะครับ"

    Can you use soy milk?
    ใช้น้ำเต้าหู้ได้ไหม use นมถั่วเหลือง is better than น้ำเต้าหู้

    Make it hot please.
    ทำไห้ร้อนด้วยนะ typo ให้

Can you make it with soy milk?
    ทำไห้กับน้ำเต้าหู้ again...typo and i would say ใช้นมถั่วเหลืองทำได้ไหมครับ?

    Drink it here(not take away).
    ดื่มที่นี่ correct

Also is there a difference in classifier between the ceramic cup and the paper cup used? In other words when do I use แก้ว or ถ้วย?
For me, ถ้วย sounds bulky and more ceramic. but แก้ว is like a glass fragile. But usually, thai ppl mix the classifiers...you can say whichever you like. But if you want the coffee in the ceramic cup, be sure to tell the barista to use "แก้วmug" not แก้วกระดาษ or ถ้วยกระดาษ

    hope this helps

    Thank you for your help.
Another question that throws me off when ordering a plain coffee is whether I want it black or not because its said so fast. Could you give me an example of how this is being asked and should I just answer with สีดำ or ไส่ (ครีม/นม) เพิ่มด้วยนะ???

If i were to make you a coffee.... i would ask เอาน้ำตาล กับครีม(อย่างละ)กี่ช้อนคะ? how many spoons of sugar and cream do u want?

If you want it black coffee....เอากาแฟดำครับ or ไม่ต้องใส่เลยครับ
or you can say น้ำตาล 1,2,3,... ครีม 1,2,3,... up to you
