=) I am planning to, but from whatever I can find to read online, it seems to be selling clothes and souvenirs, not really a wet market selling live fish etc per se

=) Here a link plus the photos of Talat Sao and the bus station and the surrounding areas with photos to refer to plus Talat Khua Din,
Talat Cho Noong Chan and Talat Thong Khan Kham which got sell Meat/Fish as stated in the website. I'm not very sure of the information correctness...

From the Anou National Stadium, cross the mainroad turn left about 300metres,you'll see a road junction then turn right.Walk for another 10 minutes to the very end and that is Talad Tonghangkham wet market.100% locals.Live seafood and there's one stall with the giant Mekong fish. There are two chinese own hotel in the locality. From there at the main road, you can walk for another 15minutes keeping left will bring you back to chinatown area.

Thanks so much, that's awesome info. Now I'm regretting that I had not stuck to my initial plan to visit Chinatown. Got to wait til next trip By the way, I saw a kind of flat fish that has almost the same shape as pomphet fish and also sold live for the dinner table but not so white in colour. They are quite commonly sold at wet markets in Vientiane and Bangkok. What's their names and are they freshwater or saltwater fish?

The distance between Talat Sao and Talat Tongkhankham is approximately 5kms.Maybe you need a tuk-tuk from Talat Sao which is available at the side road beside Vientiane bus station.Surpsisingly they have english names on top of their vehicle windscreen.Walk along the food stalls till your see a small lane to the main road, turn left and all there.
The pomphet fish are normally light greyish white and is a salt water fish mostly from Thailand.
Whereas the other type which you see are freshwater and some cultured at the Nam Ngam Lake where there is a floating restaurant as well.About 26km from town. It's the tilapia fish, some are reddish and black.Ask them to steam it and sure you love it not one but two.
