Re: Taxis Chiang Mai
Thanks Bucky, but she's my wife. She doesn't like aggression at all. Her solution is to accept things, but I can't. I've done some more research, and apparently they go from Chang Puak as well Betty. Hopefully a better day tomorrow.

Ah, the motorcycle. We had a bit of a scare last week, and she doesn't want to get on one any more. I would prefer that myself. She can't ride very well herself, and is/was a nervous passenger.

Re: Taxis Chiang Mai
They used to go from Chang Phua Gate (Mani Nopharat Rd)-maybe that has changed since last i used one in 1996!!
Fare used to be more on the upward journey than the return-maybe they switch the engine off and coast down part of the way to save fuel!
Songthaews will leave only when full -or sufficiently full for the driver to think it is profitable enough to depart-as it goes direct(non-stop)-at least the one I got did."There is no such thing as totally useless information"

Re: Taxis Chiang Mai
I haven't looked at Chang Phueak since 2007 so I have no idea - back then the problem was that Thais go from the zoo, many farangs go on tours or by motorcycle, so there is lots of pressure to charter the songthaew and that used to be 400 back then. I remember because we waited for about an hour for others to turn up and when nobody did, my friend had a WTF moment and paid up just to stop wasting time. I didn't have a motorcycle back then. an ordinary 125 cc can take two people all the way up to the royal palace as well, rental is 150-200 per day.

Re: Taxis Chiang Mai
Anyone have any recommendations for companies renting motorcycles in CM-ie places that do not palm you off with an unserviced death trap-just for general info purposes, as I do not think I would be happy on a motorcycle in CM these days!

Re: Taxis Chiang Mai
The last time I took the song tieow and van was about 6 years ago. I just followed my Thai friends. The last time I went up Doi Suthep was end last year when I drove from Bangkok to Chiang Mai.

Riding the motorcycle up the moutain looked dangerous to me.Paknam Web Network: Thai Travel News and Online Guidebooks

How about renting a car then? I believe there are many car renting services at the airport. Its more fun to drive yourself and you get to go anywhere you want.

Re: Taxis Chiang Mai
that drive looks a LOT worse from a songthaew than it actually is. it is a very nice comfortable drive. downhill it is a little hard on my wrists.
sorry, I have no idea about rental agencies. when I needed to rent recently, just had to find one that has automatic motorcycles, which is not so easy, so I wasn't picky.
no idea about cars, personally.
(I would have yelled his head off, btw, that driver, and wouldn't have paid what had been agreed on for something different. yepp, I did it before with a Bangkok taxi driver who took us on a city tour for HOURS stuck in the traffic jam and it was too late when I realised. I refused to pay what his stupid meter said. maybe a threat to call the tourist police would have an effect? I don't know. but not if the Thai-speaking person in the company refuses to speak up. that must be the green signal for him to walk all over you!)
