    What mantra to say when visiting Wat???

    Hello All,

    I went to a Wat here in California for Songkran this past Sunday and noticed many people kneeling down and praying to these statues. I wanted to pay my respects as they did but I did not know what is the proper mantra to say.

    What is the proper mantra or chant to say when lighting incents and paying homage to the statues below?

    I am half Thai-Chinese and half American and am looking to learn more about my mothers culture. Theravada buddhism and the Thai culture has Always interested me and even more so as I get older. My mother converted to Catholicism long ago when I was born, as I was raised so.

    Thank You all,
    Tony

    Re: What mantra to say when visiting Wat???

    Good question, Tony. I don't know what people chant to the statue (Buddha Image). What I did was I started up with the short standard chant 3 times ( we call 駹 3 " Tang Na-mo 3 job ) then moved to another short standard chapter ( it is more like to greet and pay respect to Buddha or Wai Phra = ) without knowing the meaning of it. It is in Bhali language. We are taught to chant in Bhali but a lot of people don't know the meaning of it. Me neither!!! That's all I do when I chant in to the statues but I believe those who are more expert in chanting, chant more perhaps the chapter of offering those incents and flowers to the statues as well. There are different chant for different occasions but I just can't remember all. Good luck :-)

    Hi Tonyo, here is a short and simple prayer which I acctually pray to pay my respectfull into Buddha image as the part of our spiritual journey. To transforming confusion into clarity and suffering into joy by gratitude towards Buddha's teachings and Tripple Gem.

    ͹ͺмվҤ ͧ 繼Ũҡ ͺ¾ͧͧ

    NAMO TASSA BHAGAVATO ARAHATO SAMMA SAMBUDDHASSA ( 3 times)
    Homage to The Blessed One, The Noble one. The Fully Enlightened One

    ----------------------------------------------------------
    Then following by pray "Offering to Tripple Gem " as following;

    ѧ ط Ф

    ARAHAM SAMMASAMBUDDHO BHAGAVA
    The Lord,the Perfectly and Blessed One
