I am having a big chat on msn with a thai who is explaining it to me but it seems to be getting more and more confusing.
Soon I don't even dare to say any of these words anymore, afraid to make mistakes and learn it the wrong way 55555

Per example:

the question = what are you doing?

possible answers could be:

มาที่นี่เป็นสิ่งแรกที่ผมทำในวันนี้ (coming here is the first thing I do today)

ทำหลายอย่าง (well euh.. i did several things)

but this -อย่างแรกคือมาที่นี่ - is also possible.

So really.. what is going on here?

but ฃอง can also be "things" such as in เก็บของ or as in ฃองหวาน. but things can also be สิ่ง and อย่าง but what is the difference.

Expressions like "Thank you for.." and "Sorry for.." are fixed expressions that work like this:

Thank you for +noun -> use สำหรับ i.e. thank you for the coffee = kop kun samrap cafe

Thank you for +verb -> use ที่ i.e. thank you for teaching me thai = kop kun tee son paasaa thai hai pom

It's an elegant usage, so not for everyday speech. But I found a couple of examples of its usage in writing:

ตามปกติกลุ่มดาวนี้เป็นวัตถุที่ล่องลอยไปอย่างอิสระ หรือมิฉะนั้นก็จะลอยไปกับดาวอื่นๆ Generally they are found as free-floating objects or companions to stars.

ในระหว่างนี้ งานด้านทันตกรรมศพแต่ละศพ ต้องทำการวินิจฉัยอย่างละเอียดระมัดระวัง เพราะว่าเทคนิควิธีการและวัตถุที่ได้มาล้วนเป็นตัวชี้ว่าบุคคลเหล่านั้นได้รับการรั กษาฟันมาจากที่ไหนทั้งสิ้น Meanwhile, each corpse's dental work must be carefully analysed because the techniques and materials used can provide tell-tale signs of where someone received dental treatment.

Flammie, the short (and wishy-washy) answer is that in some usages อย่าง and แบบ are basically interchangeable, and in others they aren't. You kind of just have to learn when you can and can't interchange them. Maybe the below might help shed some light:

อย่าง 1 C kind, sort, variety (hence classifier for articles, utensils, sports, etc.). 2 like, -ly, in ... a manner. อย่าง is often best translated as "like, the way, in the manner of," e.g. อย่างนี้ "like this," i.e. "of this kind, sort; in this way." In this sense, it is synonymous with โดย (written). Synonym: ชนิด

Examples:

อย่าทำแบบนี้สิ Don't do that.
เลิกพูดแบบนั้นซะที Stop talking like that.
เวลาเขาทำหน้าแบบนั้น when he looks like that . . .
ฉันจะต้องไม่ทำแบบนี้ I mustn't do this.
เขารู้จักยิ้มแบบนี้ดี He knew that smile well.
ไม่ได้ ๆ อย่าทำแบบนั้น No, no, you should not do that!
โปรดอย่าให้ลูกทำแบบนั้น Please keep me from doing that.
ผมเคยอ่านพบเรื่องแบบนี้ I've read of such cases.
บางทีมันก็เป็นแบบนี้แหละ Sometimes it does that.
เราก็เขียนแบบนี้ได้นี่นา I could do something like this.

แบบ 1 N model, type, style. 2 N pattern, form.

Examples:

ผมพูดอย่างนั้น I said that.
และทุกอย่าง and everything
รู้กันอย่างดีเลยฮะ I knew them very well.
ฉันจะทำให้เธอทุกอย่าง I'd do anything for you.
เราสามารถมีทุกอย่างได้ We can have everything.
แม่แพะก็ทำอย่างนั้นเสมอมา The mother goat had always done this.
แต่นี่ทุกอย่างมันผิดไปหมด and everything's all wrong.

It's very hard to articulate a general rule for knowing when you can or can't interchange them. Some usages are clearly not interchangeable (e.g., ทุกอย่าง). And I'm sure there are some real subtleties that Thais know but probably can't explain very well.

To be safe, just use แบบ when you mean "model" or "style" and use อย่าง for everything else. That might not be perfect, but it will probably work 90+% of the time.

Hi all,

Looks like a lot of you are trying to make it so complicated for yourselves. You would learn quicker if you keep it simple.

วัตถุ means 'thing/things/item/items' or สิ่งของ

โบราณ means very old fashion which could become like a history(maybe 400 500 B.C or more), e.g a historical movie (ภาพยนตร์/หนัง โบราณ). If someone says that you are 'โบราณ' they mean that you are very old fashion or a caveman who knows nothing about the modern world. Similar to a วัตถุโบราณ that is an item that was used in the history.

I explained this in my post above this one, however, โบราณวัตถุ and โบราณสถาน are often related.

วัตถุ = item(s)/thing(s)
สถาน = place
โบราณ = very old (400 - 500 + years ago)

โบราณวัตถุ = an item or a thing what was used in the history e.g a spoon, weapons etc...
โบราณสถาน = a place or a building that was built in the history e.g temples, houses etc...
