traveling to Laos from Ubon

Hello All I was wondering what is the first city in Laos that you arrive in from Ubon. I would like to go with my wife in April after Songkran and would like to look at hotels. We will either take a bus from Ubon or I might rent a car.

From Ubon it's Pakse, it's an hours drive + another 30 mins at immigration
