Re: Interested in Dating Thai Guy from College.

I like it. I would do the same if i was in Miharu21's place
Some people really need time to get involved in a relationship. May be just like this thai guy.

Re: Interested in Dating Thai Guy from College.
Hi Miharu, I don't know if you are still reading this thread...
I have never dated a Thai guy, but I used to have this stereotype that Thai people, no matter how Western educated, will always still like traditional Thai festivals and enjoy being in the know about their hometowns. Until very recently when I spoke to a very newly-acquainted Thai schoolmate who had been educated for several years in a so-called Western country and told him that my friends/cousins and I enjoy visiting Paklong Talat whenever we are in BKK, his hometown. He looked at me with eyes big with genuine wonder and asked me what that place was. I must admit I got a huge shock (mainly from my expectation that all Bangkokians must have known this place).
Then, on another more recent occasion when we were on IM and I casually asked him how he planned to celebrate the upcoming Songkran with the Thais he knew (he had Thai contacts here where we were), he simply replied that he might not even be celebrating it as it would depend on whether he was busy or not. In short, he was more interested in conversing about other things and celebrating Songkran appeared (at least on IM) seemed to be the least of all.
What I'm trying to say is that Thai guys, especially if they have received an overseas Western education, and also if they are of the younger generation (my Thai friend is younger than me), chances are their worldviews and opinions will no longer be the same as the generic Thai guys, if there ever is such a group.Sleep, little one, close your eyes, mother will sing you a lullaby... Sleep in a jewel cradle, sleep, mother will rock you.
If you don't sleep the midges will go for your eyes and pollen will fall on the cradle....Sleep, close your eyes...

Re: Interested in Dating Thai Guy from College.
I had wondered if Mr X's family were different than most Thais since they never seemed to be interested in Thai festivals.
When I was teaching I would sometimes come home and ask about certain festivals and holidays I had read about in our books at AUA. He usually acted as if he didn't know what I was talking about. More recently I mentioned Loy Kratong to a niece, saying I liked the sentiment behind the celebration. She replied that she liked the idea, also, but didn't celebrate.
It may be that some people think themselves too sophisticated to celebrate these old traditions and just don't want to be considered old fashioned. Just a thought . . .

Susana, incidentally, when I first delightedly asked my new Thai friend (the one mentioned above) if he was Thai (we were talking and I caught his Thai accent amidst his otherwise flawless English), I noticed that his smile suddenly fell momentarily when he heard my question, and although he confirmed in the positive a few moments later with his regained smile, he did not for once ask me how I knew, which was how I expected he (or any Thai) would respond and with excitement and pride too.

Peiyan, I had wondered why was your new Thai friend smile suddenly fell momentarily when he heard your question? Normally a person's reaction will be kinda surprised? Or himself doesn't want people to know that he is from thai?

I was rather surprised by his response too. There could be many reasons why it was so, but I did not ask him as I did not feel at that time that it was polite to ask (we barely knew each other).

Yeah there could be many reasons of why it was so. However at the present moment of what I could thought of is that maybe he doesn't feel a sense of belonging to his home country? Well, that is my wild guess and who knows it might prove me wrong...
A food for thought, different people have different kinds of personality and perhaps in this manner, body language and facial expressions differs for different types of people.Franklin D.
