Freed Aung San Suu Kyi’s call for a second multi-ethnic Panglong Conference has sparked new hope among ethnic groups for real national reconciliation and eventually autonomy " although the idea is still far from reality, ethnic groups said yesterday.
Aung San Suu Kyi told reporters a day after her release that she would like to call for a second Panglong Conference that is appropriate to 21st century concerns.
Suu Kyi’s father General Aung San " who then represented the Burmese government" reached an agreement with ethnic leaders from the Shan, Kachin and Chin on February 12, 1947, to accept full autonomy in internal administration for the ethnic controlled frontier areas after independence from Britain.
The agreement, which was an outcome of the conference at Panglong, was never enforced due to the assassination of national hero Aung San in July 1947, just months before independence. Many ethnic groups, notably leaders who signed the pact and of those represented in the conference such as Mon and Karen, deem the Panglong agreement as their bible of struggle for self-rule.
All ethnic minorities who have fought with the military regime for more than 60 years expected Aung San’s daughter Suu Kyi to carry on her father’s mission and honour the agreement, said Shan intellectual Khuensai Jaiyen.
