In land-scarce Singapore, there remains only one last kampong in its mainland. Small wonder it is listed as one of the sites to be visited on the Jalan Kayu Heritage Trail.

The first photo shows the main entrance leading into the kampong. The place even comes with a flood metre and a board with regular records of the current water level - a rarity in urban Singapore.

A resident puppy looking around for spoils... Perhaps it's hoping for some treats from us!

Sleep, little one, close your eyes, mother will sing you a lullaby... Sleep in a jewel cradle, sleep, mother will rock you.
If you don't sleep the midges will go for your eyes and pollen will fall on the cradle....Sleep, close your eyes...

    Inside the kampong.

The residents pay about $70 per month for rental of premises to the village headwoman. Not a bad deal considering to get fresh air, garden of your own in addition to this already very cheap rental.

Another rarity is the overhanging electric cables - we stopped seeing this in the rest of Singapore since I was in primary school two decades ago.

The yellow fruit is the cacao fruit used to make chocolate. Initially the tour guide wanted us to have a taste of it but the owner of the tree was not around then so we just had to forgo it, since we could not possibly go thieving around by plucking it off without permission.

There's also a stream in the kampong where one can easily spot some fish, shrimps and the home of mud crabs.

Here's the link to the walking trail map by URA to all the highlights in Jalan Kayu. When you are there, don't forget to visit the prata shops. I especially adore the banana prata.

Kinda feel a bit sad that the URA plans to redevelop Kampong Lorong Buangkok, but gave no time frame. As the kampong days was not seen frequently as it was in the olden days due to globalization whereby my father did used to live in kampong when his younger days.

My father's signature name in kampong days was called botak (like army men hairstyle). Why he chooses botak was because the childrens couldn't tried to catch hold of him while playing around with friends. WIth min of clothes to wear and thus earning the title of the name haha.

Do visit it while it is still there. It won't be a wasted trip as it is part of the heritage trail for Jalan Kayu - arm yourself with the trail map in post #4 and you will have a rewarding afternoon...

    Have fun ya...

Actually it is located very near to my place, should be under the same polling area. I hope it will be preserved, with new HDB flats built only 300m from it! I will write to my MP or URA, that is after the elections.

Please do, PJ! We SGians are counting on you for that haha

Now, if only the kampong put aside some of the houses for exclusive homestays... hmmmm....
