    Deepavali in Singapore

Eve of Deepavali at Little India is the best time for some last-minute hard bargaining. But for non-Hindus it is not easy to manage any discounts as merchants know keenly that if you are here to bask in the festive joy, you will most probaby have come with the intention to buy something. Not to mention that non-Hindus, we usually are not well versed in how much we should be paying for certain items or foodstuff.

Sleep, little one, close your eyes, mother will sing you a lullaby... Sleep in a jewel cradle, sleep, mother will rock you.
If you don't sleep the midges will go for your eyes and pollen will fall on the cradle....Sleep, close your eyes...

The packet of orange, wormy-looking titbits are called tiny muruku, and are usually one of the most popular indian snacks. It is my favourite too. I prefer it to potato chips actually. Even though it was nearing midnight when the photos were taken, most people were still out on the street doing their last purchases to usher in the Festival of the Lights, and hopefully that Lakshimi the Goddess of Wealth, will bestow them with prosperity the whole year round.

Komala Vilas is both an Indian vegetarian confectionary as well as an Indian vegetarian restaurant (both shops are side by side). This night of Diwali eve, the confectionary was so unbelievably crowded that it was all I could to squeeze in to get my favourite Indian sweet - jalebi, which is kind of a fried ghee in think orangey sugar syrup.

The Little India Diwali Bazaar. Many females had a henna done for about $5 per hand design, like what my friend did here. More elaborate ones cost more as it will be more time consuming.

    More henna drawing.

Some dishes from a Indian/Jain vegetarian restaurant just across the road from Mustaffa Centre. The dough-like dish is called naan and goes very well with the spicy manchao soup I ordered. My friend opted for the poori set that comes with a dahl curry dip.

    Re: Deepavali in Singapore

1st day of Deepavali: time for visiting Hindu friends and relatives. Most years, we go to a ex-schoolmate's granny house to share in her festive joy. Her granny and mum always hand make the cookies and big muruku.
