How to become a monk?

Hi, I am 20 years old and am interested in becoming a monk in thailand. I was an anagaraka when i was 17 at a monastery in Western australia. I have thought about ordaining here in aus but i would like to see thailand and be a monk there. I have a few questions about it.....Well, i suppose i am just wondering if foreiners are welcome to be monks in thailand, are lots of thais opposed to it?? I am teaching myself thai and would like some opinions and advice about me becoming a monk in thailand.

I would suggest you buy "Phra Farang" as it is about a foreign monk here in Thailand and his experiences.

There's also a great book called "What the Buddha Never Taught" by Tim Ward. It's all about his experience while in a wat in Thailand... this particular wat is famous for teaching foreigners. It's a very good read full of interesting facts and stories. I learned a lot from it.

I was a monk for 3 months last year at a branch monastery of Luangta Maha Boowa in Udon Thani. I had an enjoyable and useful time, but I had spent a lot of time doing retreats and living in Thailand before that.

If you are thinking long term then I'd recommend you go to Wat Pah Nanachat.

If you want to have a look around and experience Thailand first then see http://www.buddhanet.net/asia_dir/abc_t.htm for a list of wats you could visit.

You might be best to visit Perth again and get some advise, or if you are in NSW or Victoria I can recommend other monks to visit.

There is an Australian friend of mine that is monk here in Thailand. He is at Wat Pah Kung in Roi-et, which is in the Northeast. The temple is in the forrest. His name is Phra Gordan Asoko. He had no problems with being ordained in Thailand. No immigrations problems either because he is a monk. If you want his mobile number you can contact me.
